Technical Cable gear change conversion

Technical Cable gear change conversion

Does anyone know if the later Panda cable gearchange mechanism can be retro-fitted to earlier Pandas?
It can if you get all its associated parts like the little arms and brackets the sit in the engine bay to transfer the effort to selector rod in the box. In case there is any confusion, this later system is a rod and a cable that sits above the floorplan. The double cable system was not available over here. You may need to make a hole for the rod and the cable to exit through the bulkhead of course.

Thanks Lewey. So no mods to the gearbox itself then? That's what I was hoping.

Everything I need is in the picture below?

Ah right. Thanks for that. It's just something I want to do with the Road Rat at some point in the future. I'll need to rig up a bowden cable to actuate the 4x4 as well but I reckon I can do that quite easily with cannibalised gear shift bits.

hi. as i put on your wanted advert, that dual cable system looks identical to what is found on the cinqucento and seicento sportings. I don't have a working copy of eper to check part numbers, but it should all fit the box (i've not met a FIRE box that you can't swap the selectors / clutch etc all over, but then i have not worked on a 4x4, does the 4x4 have a seperate stick for engaging / disengaging 4x4 ? )

FIRE boxes on all other cars are different to Panda. The top selector arms cannot just be swapped with a cinq one. Promise. There is only one selector arm coming out of a Panda box. What will default_user do with the two cables coming from a newer gear lever?

Don't mean to sound facetious BTW.

why does the panda have to be different ? :p

are you 100% sure you cannot swap the selector mech over, i have a box in the garage with the selector mech removed and it has exposed the top of the inside of the box, the casing is held on by 4 bolts iirc.

The whole box is a different design, the first attempt at a FIRE box before they moved to the style you are familiar with and stuck. Different castings, different clutch mech and lever position, different mountings, different selector fork design and as I say, just the one lever to select all 5 or 6 gears.
It is one of the reasons that upgrade FIRE engine conversions are little bit more complicated in our cars as twinning with suitable gearboxes requires us to change clutch disengagement, gear selection and mountings.

Very interesting guys. So the long and short of it all is that I need to source the bits from a late model Panda. I think the best thing for me to do would be to buy one as a spares car (when I have the space) and do the conversion with them side by side for comparison purposes. Does anyone know when the cable change models were introduced so I know what to look for?

I think it`s better-try to find - last Panda-gear-cable revision (2002) -like this (see pic...)
Cheers,

aca, they stopped importing Pandas over here in 1995, hence the single rod and cable is the only upgrade choice, as fitted to 1993 onward cars.

That two bowden cable design will only work with the newer FIRE box (C526) as fitted to most other FIRE models like arc has been talking about. It was never designed to fit the older Panda box which every car over here has. They only fitted the C526 box and that twin cable gear lever very late on in production.

Anyway Rick, I think you've got all the info you need in this thread, I for one am bowing out!

sorry to keep going on, but i want to learn now! what box does the panda have? This is a C10 box as removed from a cinquecento sporting, and has had the selector removed - can a panda box not be stripped to this level and the unit from the c10 fitted?

The drive ratios are probably different inside the box as the Cinqecento and Seicento have smaller wheels. Don't think that would make any difference to how gears are selected though. Anyway, I'm inclined to take leweys advice, he seems pretty knowledgeable. This was only a theoretical post for something I want to do in the future and I have the info I need now.

You might want to start a new thread arc, if you really want to know the differences between the boxes.

Thanks to all for the info.

Same engines, different gearbox.

Can't find a photo anywhere and out of my three Pandas I currently have, none have normal manual boxes!

I've attached a line drawing from ePer to this reply that should at least give you an idea on how different in every way it is in terms of part interchangeability.
