Bit late now I know but only just become a member.
So just out of curiosity did you remove the cam and crankshaft pulleys.
They have locating pins on them that break off and the pulleys move and put the timing out witch would give you poor starting but no real other faults. And a simple timing check would not pick up this fault.

No mate, it would run well once started (using easy start) but when scanning the values using the laptop, I could see that it wasn't able to create enough start up fuel pressure. It needs about 200 bar before it will turn on the injectors and then idles about 300 bar; it was creating 50 bar at cranking.
Got worse and worse until couldn't even start with easystart or bump starting.
