ok, so next weekend I pick up my 1 year old Lotus Elise R :)

got £12k for my A500 which I was more than happy with, obviously had to put a fair bit in as well but the difference between these 2 cars is night and day.

it really is good riddance to the A500, it was fun for the first few months but after that you just get the overwhelming feeling that its just a fiat trying oh-so-hard (and not always succeeding ie steering, lumpy gearbox etc) to be something more.

i also wont miss the long jaunt to the few fiat dealers that stumped up enough cash to put the Abarth badges on their garages.

oh, and before i go i'll just say that with the performance of the Elise R (5sec 0-60!) id love to see an A500 owner - because you wont see me for dust :D

im gone.

I had several laps of Goodwood as a demo before we bought the Abarth, we passed every Lotus & a couple of TVR's, got passed by a McLaren Mercedes & a Porsche GT3 RS. I think that sets the record straight, to a large extent its down to Driver ability & commitment

I hope you enjoy the Lotus, great fun car & a bit raw'er

the a500 and elise are two different types of cars in two completley different classes, A500 is small hot hatch, elise is an out and out sports car.

the elise may well be faster, be better in corners etc, so it should be, thats what it is designed to do. if it wasn't it'd be a pointless car

anyway, i bet you can't do 0-60 faster than the abarth 500 with 4 passengers and a weeks shop in the boot ;)

good time to buy an elise, but it wouldnt be my everyday car especially with the changing weather

Nice one... quite jealous, but TBH if Fiat owners feel their cars are temperamental, then step aside... the Elise can be megga temperamental! Good fun though, hope the heater is a good 'un as Winter is here...

I think with all car choices it's a case of horses for courses. I'd love an Elise, but even with no kids in the house, it can't be considered as anything other than a toy. If I want to take the wife and dog to Delamere Forest for the day then I can't see us using an Elise, or anything similar for that matter. The cars are reputed to handle beautifully, but that can't be said to be a priority on my 13 mile motorway journey to work.

I envy you in being able to own one of today's motoring icons, but surely you should be buying the Elise because, quite simply, you want an Elise, not because you don't want an Abarth.
