Hey folks,
A couple of questions, if I could:

Due to some leaks, this weekend I am changing my rocker gasket and oil sump and was wondering if there where any other checks you would recommend while while the rocker cover is off?

Also, with my sump I purchased some sealant, as It seems you don't need a sump gasket. I seem to recall on another thread somebody mentioning you having to wait a while for the sealant to set, but there is no mention of a time to wait on the tube - how long would you advise?

I am also thinking of painting the sump with Hammerite Anti rust primer - which I have a small tin of - does that sound like a good idea ( I thought so)?

Thanks in advance

Never had a sump rust before.

With RTV (fish pool or bath tub calk) I clean both surfaces with meths or similar solvent and apply a bead of RTV to the easier to access surface (the sump in this case) and aersol with WD40 or other fine oil on the other surface.

You want to be able to easily undo in the future.

You dont need loose bits of RTV in the sump with the oil as the pump and oil ways might not like them, so the bead can be away from the oil side of sump except for the bolt or stud holes, when it needs to divert around the inside edge of the holes.

I only wait for meal or tea break, not pub crawl interval. I use a wet style gasket.

could check the valve clearance but if it runs good i wouldnt worry.

put a good bead of sealant on the lip of the sump and around each hole wait till a bit of a skin forms on it then bolt it on. make sure there is no oil on the mating surface on the block

If its a new sump you are fitting, they come already coated.

If its a used sump, wire brush and apply the hammerite primer, then put a top coat on.

Primer is porous, to allow a top coat to stick.

Ahhh, well yes it is a new sump - I guess I thought the extra layer of protection would just protect it longer from grit pelting and corrosion.
But if you think it's a waste of time painting it, I will leave it as is.

My engines normally oil mist so you need to gunk them to keep clean.

I have great trouble dismantling even when I WD 40 one surface. I also use copper slip on threads, or (screw) locktite to reduce the tendance to gall.
