Jon -- as far as I can see on the How Many Left app, these were all manufactured in 1992. (Parkers would seem to confirm this.) Were they superseded, therefore, by the 1108 cc version...?

In 1991, a facelift was introduced. This entailed a new front grille with a smaller five-bar corporate badge, plus revisions to trim and specifications across the range. New arrivals included the 'Selecta', which had a continuously variable transmission with an electromagnetic clutch. This advanced transmission was available either with the normal 999 cc FIRE engine (revised with single-point fuel injection and a catalytic converter) or an all new 1108 cc FIRE unit, fitted with electronic fuel injection and a three-way catalytic converter and producing 51 bhp (38 kW).
The new CLX trim also featured a five-speed gearbox as standard. The range now comprised the 750 Young (769 cc ohv), 750 and 750 CLX (both 769 cc FIRE sohc), 900 Dance (903 cc ohv), 1000 Shopping, CLX, CL Selecta and S (all with 999 cc sohc, available with or without SPI and catalytic converter depending on the market), 1100 CL Selecta (1108 cc sohc with SPI and cat) and the 4x4 Trekking (999 cc, again available with and without a cat depending on the market). The Elettra concluded the range.

I've been told that "it starts and drives fine..." -- so don't really know why he's proposing to break it. (Maybe it's just the thought of what might need to be done to it to get it MOT'd, and then taxed...?) We shall see. As of now, I'm just intrigued by what could turn out to be a very rare Panda....

The ideal Selecta if you prefer tinkering with carbs rather than SPi injectors.Homeward, if reasonably tidy it has to be saved
And I've never had the experience of a carbed Selecta before.Like you say superseeded by the 1108 SPi unit in 92/93.

I'd like to report back that it was a rust bucket, that drove appallingly.
But it wasn't...!
I think I may be losing my mind: but the doors had no rust, neither did the sills. One of the rear arches looked like it may have had some work -- but I could find nothing structurally wrong with it (after spending twenty minutes crawling around it...). Even the front of the rear wheel arches is solid, where sills meet the plastic guards.... In fact, the bloke selling it is so confident that it's structurally sound, etc., that he's going to MOT it for me at cost (hopefully, legitimately...); and put in a newer battery... !
It started straight away; changed gear easily; ticks over fine (once warmed up... -- but there wasn't a lot of fuel in it...); drives fine, forwards and backwards; and doesn't make any untoward noises, or display any warning lights (apart from the fuel...).
I have the following concerns:
- The bonnet shuts fine; but, to me, looked ever so slightly out of true... -- although I could see no obvious evidence of a shunt; and the side panels, and front, were all square.
- There is an oil leak. No evidence of mayo on the cap; and the disptick oil was clear and golden. I doubt it was tidied up: as the rest of the car was quite dirty; and there was still evidence of the leak. It didn't overheat whilst I drove it, though... (although I couldn't go far: as the car is not yet taxed...). If it should turn out to be the HG, I shall get it sent to VmanC, for fettling.
- It's got a towbar and reversing sensors on the back (which I shall remove).
- The upholstery is slightly tired: but the car has done 78,000 miles.
- The doors beep when you open them: so I suspect more than just the sensors have been added.
- It needs a damn' good clean.
It's actually a brighter turquoise than Pippin (or will be, once Messrs Auto Glym and Meguiar have worked their magic...); and all the panels match -- although I think there may have been a dent repaired on the (rust-free) passenger door. There is also a very slight, small dent in the tailgate. But, overall, in much better shape than Pippin....

Anyhoo: if anyone can guess how much I shall be paying for it (not including the cost of the MOT...), I shall buy you a bottle of your favourite tipple (which covers alcohol and Pandaly fluids...!?)! The guy hasn't even taken a deposit off me: and is only selling it because he thought it was too good to scrap, and his mum (who was lovely) used to have a 4x4...!
Piccies to follow, later, when it's all sunk in. I'm hoping to collect it in a week or so; and now have to work out (a) where/how to hide it from Mrs h; (b) how I eventually explain that we have five FIATs; (c) how I get it to Vernon (to hide, temporarily; and then to wave his magic wand over... (matron)).
