Hi,
Can anyone help a Fiat newbie. I've just bought this car - it was missing badly at low revs and was very hard to start - seemed to run ok at higher revs - replaced the HT leads and now it doesn't miss but the starting problem persists. I removed the starter motor and oiled the shaft and end cog where it contacts the ring gear. Same problem. The battery is fine. It will only turn over for a couple of seconds, however, before it seems to fire enough to kick the starter motor out but the engine doesn't catch. After about 10-20 attempts it will (usually) catch and start. I read somwhere that it may be a problem with the CPS - Crank position sensor? What's that? Or is this the wrong tree to be barking up?

Hello there and welcome to the forum (y)

I'm sure you'll find your answers down at the Bravo section but it may have something to do with the CPS sensor???

Welcome noob (y) and @ Ozz CPS  whats the car got to do with the crown prosecution service :D

Thanks Ozzie,
Yeah I've seen a few of those posts but What is a Crank Position sensor? Further to the above, I've got it a bit wrong. I've just discovered that if I hold the key in postion, the starter motor does keep turning but the cog that connects with the flywheel must lose connection after a couple of seconds. So, before I was letting go the key when the motor was stopping turning over after a couple of seconds and assumed the starter was cutting out. It wasn't. Does that sound like the CPS?
