Technical Bravo leaking sunroof

Hi everyone,

Our Fiat Bravo has a slight little problem with heavy rain. As soon as that happens we get water coming in through the sunroof somehow. We have checked everything we can check, but nothing solves the problem. The gutters run free, we have checked everything over time and time again and everyone that has had a look is baffled. We can see how the water comes into the car, but can't figure out how that is linked to where it comes in.

Anyone else had any problems and how was this sorted out (preferably without spening too much money .

It could be the aerial gasket, have you checked that?
Anyways, check this page, I'm sure you'll find the solution in it. If not, report back cos we have some well experienced people in the leaking area!!

Sunroof seal, not always a solution. The sunroof seal normally solves wind noise. The sunroof seal is supposed to let water in, hence why you have little water gutters that channel excess water to the drainage pipes.

If the drainage pipes in the roof are clear there are several reasons why it may leak. Firstly try and check it is the sunroof. It can be the cars aerial seal.

I would suggest next time it rains check the roof lining for wetness, mould patches etc. If its coming from the roof, it will more than likely be the sunroof frame thats leaking, not the seal. The frame has probably got a hairline hole between the joins in the frame, this will need sealing professionally. This is the most common problem.

However you can check the sunroof seal, the aerial seal etc for the leak.

If the seat gets wet its normally the sunroof. If the floor puddles up, its probably blocked drainage holes under the scuttle panel. If you open the bonnet and look where the hindges are you will see a small gap, leaves and other muck deposits here, if possible clean it out and free the drainage holes. This solves the leak coming through the bulkhead.

However water from a sunroof leak can travel down the A-pillar trim and down the rubber door seal to the floor. So dont always assume its a bulkhead leak if the floor is wet.

Other leaks can be badly fitted door seals, even the protection membrane between the door and the door trim, can cause water to enter the car. I had a case where the water wet my floor due to the water running down the door speaker wires and then puddling underneath the speak until it overflowed then it drained off into the car. All fixed now though. Good Luck with the leak. Also if the windscreen has been replaced recently, then this could of been the cause of a water leak aswell. But rarely is the case.

the aerial gasket fixed the leak on my previous bravo, with an aerial leak you tend to get drips running down the windscreen when braking. i used a small rubber band as a gasket to seal the aerial before i tightened the nut.

i've still got a damp patch under my driver's side sun visor on my current bravo, tried all the usual fixes but no luck. i think i'm going to take the sunroof out and seal it myself with some marine adhesive. damn it why cant fiat make cars that like the rain! my girlfriend's mk2 punto has crap wipers that judder and recently one popped off its linkage. i guess it doesnt rain in in italy?

Sooo glad the Marea comes with air-con (oh isn't that a can of worms waiting to be released ) rather than the sunroof!

must admit i love my sunroof but i'd swap it for A/C any day, its less hassle and less noise. the wind noise at 100mph is rediculous even with the slider fully shut. a new seal does little to reduce the noise.

i have sameproblemwith sunroof leaking wetpatches on lining and seat had wholesunroof out still cant seem to find the leak

take the roof lining off and apply a good layer of silicone sealant all around the sunroof chassis. it took me a few attempts to stop the leak, but it was worth it.

sorry to highjack your thread LeeMinky I also have a BAD leak.
From the sound of what Jug was saying, my aerial gasket thing neads sealing, as when I brake, I get drips dripping down the windscreen and onto the steering wheel!! (I put a roof rack on that "grips" the sides of the doors, so I'm wondering if I've knackered it by over-tightning the roof-rack)

However, I ALSO had the problem of the rear-windscreen wiper hose coming off, and stupidly (previous car experience) I assumed it was a blocked jet, so ive been powering the water through.
I now have the worse case of mould I've seen (photos later today)
So I'm wondering if anyone can suggest a way of getting rid of the amazing amount damp. I dont have a drive/garage, so can't leave a dehumidifier in or anything. Is it something a garage might do?!

if it drips when you brake its often because the water overflows into the gap between the roof and sunroof, flowing onto the roof lining and then dripping from the front. take the roof lining off and seal it with silicone. its very common but easily fixed as long as you dont spare the silicone, get a full tube of silicone spread around the sunroof chassis.

as for the damp in the boot. tak ethe boot carpet out and leave it in your house to dry off. any damp that has collected under the boot carpet should be wiped up with a towel.

I will have a go at taking the roof lining off, although I might need some guidance as to how to do that! I'll take the boot carpet out as you suggest.
I also just bought a dehumidifier complete with 12v power lead so I'm going to let that sucker go until it kills my car battery. Recharge and do it again .. and probably again and again
