Hi everyone, have got an Bravo HGT 1999 20v 155, only done 73k & new cambelt @ 69k, two owners (me being 2nd). Its costing me an arm and leg in fuel and I have seen a '55 plate JTD Stilo for 10k. Anyone know wether they are good or not and how they compare to an HGT? I thought I'd ask on here rather than be bullsh****d by a salesman. My HGT is in mint condition & Sassi grey. If the Stilo is ok, any ideas what I should ask for mine for a trade in?

tuning

Would you be getting the jtd tuned?

if so i don't know what they can be taken upto

maybe someone else can shed some light on this.

untuned, HGT is gunna be far better looking and sounding and shifting.

How many miles you do?

Re: tuning

If its a 3 door I would say go for it. The standard Stilo looks better than the Bravo imo and the interior is leagues ahead. Having been in my mates 3 door Stilo loads of times I have to say it seems like a class ahead of the Bravo. Although I haven't driven an HGT or Stilo.

Re: tuning

I am getting around 25-30 miles urban, doing a lot of urban driving now in my job and its forever visits to the petrol station. Long motorway journeys ok but thought a diesel might be a better option but don't want to lose out much on the acceleration, so thought the turbo might be good...anyone driven one?

Re: false economy

Crap.......!!!!!! am not boasting u pratt. I am asking advice !! I love my HGT to bits and would be very sad to see it go. Just want something more economical with a bit of power. I do also no the concept of car depreciation

Re: false economy

I would also like to add that the day I buy a 1 litre will be when I can no longer toilet myself and need to wear support socks. Good evening.

Re: tuning

yeah, about 160bhp in the stilo JTD would be nice :)

Diesel way slower

i have just changed my motor for virtually the same reasons..... Fed up with high insurance costs & poor fuel economy.

I had a Marea 2.0l 20v which I owned for five years. I loved it to bits well quick & reliable. However all good things must come to an end so I traded ( What a laugh I got next to norhing in part ex for the Marea!! ) it in for a Stilo JTD with all the toys. Sat Nav, Heated electric seats, Sky roof, Multichanger CD etc etc etc.

It is light years slower & totally different to drive in comparison to a quick petrol motor. Handling ,accelaration complete with turbo flat spot makes it a poor relation to a true sport's car drive with decent handling & power.

But I have gained in the pocket with insurance now halved & fuel consumption improved by at least 50% . All those toys & a superior cabin goes some way to compensating for the inferior driving pleasure. Suppose it horse's for course's IMO you will never be able to find power handling & economy as a package in any car ... Fiat or otherwise!!!!

Re: Diesel way slower

Thanks for your advice mate, what you have said makes a lot of sense & thats the way I was feeling it may be for me. You cant have the fuel economy and power etc. Glad to know you like your JTD. Do you think 10k for a 55 plate is good? Don't know much about Stilo JTD's but its nice in Siver & has alloys, looks a bit sporty...how much d'ya think I should let my HGT go for against it?

JTD tuning

Why don't you get your JTD tuned, alfanige @ www.angeltuning.co.uk can work wonders, can get it upto at least 150bhp i think (don't quote me though). Then you will have power and economy.

True it won't match the HGT been heavier but it'll still shift!!

Plus i'd only get it in 3 door, 5 door is big fat and ugly, like my next door neighbours woman!!!

To be honest i'd get a skoda fabia vrs, can be tuned to 175bhp for a few hundred quid and its got diesel fuel economy and is really bloody quick, quicker than an HGT perhaps!!!! Depends on wether you like the look of the car though (has got 5 doors which is practical but not as easy on the eye). Skoda is VW really so you get really good reliabilty too and all for 12k!!!

Lastly, its only insurance group 9!!!!!

goto www.parkers.co.uk for a "market valuation" of your HGT

Re: parkers.co.uk

You don't have to spend anywhere near £10k to get a decent diesel car, 3 or 5k tops.
Go for an Alfa 156 for about 5-6k if you want to splash out. Save the difference and go on a nice holiday.

Re: parkers.co.uk

£5-6K on a diesel 156 will probably be a 2.4 and might be a bit of a high mileage dog so buy with care! Also a 156 with the 1.9 non-multijet engine will be quite slow - its the same engine as the Bravo/Stilo and weighs a lot more!!

I have a Bravo jtd and its ok but a bit slow -needs re-mapping and I almost managed to get it done a couple of years ago!

My next car (as soon as I have sold the Bravo) will almost certainly be a new Stilo jtd (definately will get it re-mapped now that it can be done in Glasgow) or a 156 Sportwagon Multijet. The problem is that the Stilo is cheap to buy new compared with Alfas and a year old 147 is worth as much as a year old 156!
(prefer the 156 Sportwagon to the 147 anyway)

I can get a new UK spec Stilo jtd Sporting with side skirts, metallic paint and the MP3 player for £11K so bear that in mind if you are buying a second hand one. The Sporting is a re-badged Dynamic with 17" wheels and the leather covered steering wheel and (I think) cruise control as standard.

Re: parkers.co.uk

Buy a 1.2 Stilo. It will be fast enough for you.

Re: parkers.co.uk

The only problem with the Skoda Fabia vRS is that its really quite small. they say it feels like a big car, but if you've been driving a marea 155 then you'd be better with the Stilo JTD angeltuned to 150bhp (should be almost as fast as your marea) or the Alfa 156 1.9JTD mapped to the same power. Also, with the Fabia vRS, Skoda dealers are keeping the price artificially high on models still in warranty, but this has to stop soon, so there will have to be a drop in used prices. I suspect this will happen when the 06 models arrive, but then, i thought that about when the 05plate arrived, so my guess is just that, a guess.

Dont buy a 55 plate alfa156 or Stilo JTD because depreciation is pretty damned heavy on both. Alfa dealers are now selling brand new Alfa 156's with 4k off list price (ie about £12K) because the 159 is almost here, and the Stilo just isn't shifting so you can pick up a 55plate for £10K.

My advice is if you are going to have one of these then buy a pre-reg 05, or a used 54/05. You can get massive discounts (ie 40%) of the list price for taking one with as little as 10,000 miles on it. Of course, if you are going to keep the car till it falls apart (no, not 2 months for all you cynics out there, i mean 10 years) then it wont kill you to buy a heavily discounted 55 plate. i change cars quite often, so i need to watch depreciation like a hawk, but some folk, like my dad for example, seem to keep cars forever. I think the shortest he ever kept a car was 4 years. anyway, i'm wandering off topic so i'll shut up.

Re: parkers.co.uk

Thanks m8 for your sound advice !!! much appreciated

Re: parkers.co.uk

i just realised its a bravo HGT you have, not a Marea 155, lol. was thinking of PaulScatt...

so you gonna keep the stilo for a long time, or just a couple of years?

whichever you are, its definitely worth angeltuning it. it'll feel too slow compared to the hgt you are used to otherwise.
