Hi all,
I have a 1.2 16v Bravo Trofeo with rather high miles at 97000. About 800 miles ago I changed the coil pack because the car was misfiring and it solved the problem. However, the other day I was just joining the motorway from a slip road and my car just lost all power. When I popped the bonnet the engine was misfiring really badly and the entire car was violently vibrating. Called the RAC and they diagnosed the problem to the coil pack and towed me home. That night I must have left the interior light on and came to start my car a few days later and there was nothing, however lights work, heaters work, wipers work but windows don’t. Tried to jumpstart it from my mates car but still nothing, just a click under the bonnet. On closer inspection I also found acid leaking from my battery. What I would like to know is, if this battery problem is simply down to me leaving on the interior light (if so why wont it jumpstart) or if it can be related to my “coil pack problems”
Thanks very very much

Sounds like a fried batt to me. How old is the car?

Its a 2000 model. Dont think battery has been changed since new. So you thinking I need a new battery.
Thanks mate

7 year old battery? I'd say it's had a good run and due a change regardless. I'd start budgeting for a new alternator too as they invariably go within 6 months of each other I'm afraid.

a new alternator may be on the cards, it sounds like the alternator has been overcharging the battery due to a fualty voltage regulator. if this is the case and you fit a new battery, you will cook the new battery as well.

after fitting a new battery you must immediately test the voltage across the battery terminals with the engine running and no electrical appliances switched on.

if you see more than 14.4v you need to be concerned, more then 15v and i would not use it because the battery wont last long and you may damage other electrical devices.

Thanks mate.
Will probz just pick an alternator up from a breakers yard, so will any model fit, ie 1.4 12v or 1.6 16v etc? Or do I need a 1.2 16v alternator?
Thanks again(y)

Ok mate just 1 more question!
If a 1.2 alternator is what I need, does it need to be from a Bravo? Would a Punto one be ok? Its just they are easier to get than the Bravo ones.
Thanks again

yes a punto alternator will be fine, but you must get one from a 1242 16v model (mk2 sporting for example). i expect the 8v alternator will be different.
