Can anyone help. My 1.4 sx brava isn't starting.

Whenever I turn the key I just get a buzzing noise and it doesn't tunover. The lights don't dim too much which makes me think the battery is alright. The only way to get it started is to bump start it which is easy enough to do - after about 10 metres of pushing it starts. I'm getting no unusual warning lights at all on the dash.

Could this be an alternator fault? If so anyone know how much it is t fix and could a fast fit garage do an alternator? I'm not too technical so any help appreciated (I'm not sure how to run a voltmeter accross the battery.

Thanks in advance

If there is a buzzing noise I would assume you have a flat battery. When you turn the key to number 2 does the battery light come on? If not there is a charging fault ie the alternator or possibly a wiring fault.

Jeez you guys are quick!! Tom if it was the starter motor would it start with a bump start?

thanks

The starter motor turns the engine when you turn the key, if it doesn't work it won't turn the engine and not turning the engine means it won't start.

Bump starting turns the engine by you pushing the car.

If the battery was so flat it could not even engage the stater I doubt the ECU would even start up. The lights would also dim very badly when you tried to start it with the key.

From this i assumed the starter motor wasnt engaging

Pass, my guess would be around the £100 mark. Should be lots of auto electrical places in the yellow pages that could fit one.
