I have a Brava 1.6 auto yr 2000. I had the disc's and pads changed 7 months ago. Since then, I get intermittant grinding (like metal to metal). I had the brakes pads changed just over a month ago and still get the problem. Another garage looked at the front and back brakes today and can find nothing wrong. They said that certain pads can be coarse where they will grind like metal to metal. I'm at a loss with this and feel there is something not right here.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Re: Fiat Brava Brake Issue

squealing is common and nothing to worry about, but grinding should not occur once the pads are bedded in (after a few hundred miles). if they keep on grinding after bed in it probably means the noise is coming from the rear. when were the rear shoes last changed?

Rear brakes have not been changed for 6 years. The garage I took my car to today said that the back brakes were fine. The grinding definitely comes from the front.

Is it best to take my car to a Fiat dealer's garage?

you could go to fiat, but it would probably be cheaper to buy another 2 bravas instead, and less hassle.

i would live with the noise if the brakes work ok.

I'll be taking my Brava to ATS for a second opinion this Saturday. I'll let you all know what they say.

i know what ATS will say.

"ooh, aah, ooh, its not good i'm afraid, yeah, erm, looks like all the brakes need changing, ooh, aah, yeah, and the exhaust, and maybe you should get some new shocks while its in. we've got a deal on our batteries at the moment, and its a good time of year to get a new battery, i'll stick one to be safe. i could do the lot for £1200 +VAT, thats a bargain, or if you like i'll buy the car off you for a fiver"

if that happens dont call watchdog, they've heard it already many times

Do you think the rear shoes may be causing the grinding noise, even though the noise seems to come from the front?

you wouldnt believe how often a noise apparently coming from the front is actually coming from the back. and with 6 years on the same shoes they need changing unless the car has done very low milage in 6 years.
