Brake Line Corrupted

Hi All.

Bravo failed MOT today, apparently my front brake lines are highly corroded.

Can someone give me and idea of how much the garage are going to charge me to fix this?

Also the handbreak is not locking to the minimum level ....

These two things and estimate price would be great!

Thx

Tony

Handbrake could just require adjustment (**** easy) or require new shoes (long is job).

Replacing the brake pipes is going to cost a bit as they are fiddly and usually rusted and a bastard to get apart. I'd guess £150-200.

Thanks for the reply Tom.

Is the estimate you gave including parts & labour ?

If so, I dont suppose anyone on here knows a reliable Teesside / North East garage/mechanic that can do the job for that sort of money.

The garage I am taking it bk too didnt quote me a rough price and im worried about gettin screwed over....and I dont really wanna pay too much! Who does !

Thanks

Tony

Parts are quite cheap, its the buggeration of getting the bloody things off. The pipes are fitted to the car before most other parts and are in really awkward places.

I had my brake pipes replaced before.....im just reading the copy of the receipt from the other garage.

Replaced Following Brake Pipes:-

NS Rear Pipe
NS Front Pipe
NS TO/S FRONT TO REAR and NS Rear Pipe

Well that was 8 months ago, wot other front pipe could have rusted? Or am I having my leg pulled by the MOT centre?

Also suggestions on a garage and/or mechanic would be greatly appreciated. I dont mind paying the £150 :)

Thanks

You are entitled to ask the MOT guy to point out where the problem is with the car. Might be worth doing that.

Off that list though Tom...wot pipes does that leave to corrode?

.....and I was wrong they were replaced just over a year ago.

Surely cant corrode in that space of time?

The garage is a reputable one, but mainstream and probs expensive. Some pipe probs is corroded, just want it fixing as cheaply as possible.

I dont have to get it fixed at the MOT centre do I ?

Thanks

P.S Sorry for the loads of questions! :)

Its hard to tell just from those descriptions, there are lots of pipes.

the pipes previously replaced will be flexible brake hoses, they perish and split. The front brake pipes are dirt cheap for the copper pipe and unions but as Tom said, labour is the issue. the rear ones are far worse! Ive replaced mine before, although I did it myself it took an hour. I dont think you should expect to pay more than £100 for that job doing. The pipes cost me £5 each to have made up.

i had my break pipes refitted front to back all but one or two was only 100quid i think was better quote than everywhere else.

Lines & pipes

I'm a little confused. The brake lines (that I've had replaced with s/s braided ones) are odviously distinct then from their main 'feed'. So these other pipes that constitute the main body of the system (susceptable to corrosion), what are they composed of(made/supplied only by fiat?) and once connected to the 'lines' do they all then run to hydaulics in the engine bay ?(prob a daft/elementary question:))

Re: Lines & pipes

The brake lines are copper with normally a plastic coating protecting them. This deteriorates and they corrode. The brake lines run from the master cylinder to the suspension strut where they join onto a flexible brake pipe to allow the wheel to turn without snapping the lines. Theyre basic and not at all complicated.

Re: Lines & pipes

They don't use copper any more, they are all steel.

Re: Lines & pipes

which is a shame, as copper doesn't rust...

Re: Lines & pipes

Yup, but its mucho £££ compared to steel and if you handle it roughly it cracks.

Re: Lines & pipes

Thanks for the replies guys....

I havent got round to getting it fixed yet....so if anyone could recommend a good garage (Teesside) that will happily do it for the prices listed above id love you forever :)

Re: Lines & pipes

so are stainless steel compared to normal pipes, but we still retro-fit the buggers :D

Re: Lines & pipes

The pipes you replace with the stainless ones are the rubber flexy hoses, not the solid pipes.
