Well for the past ten years I've used two sets of cheap 80's Home Hi-Fi speakers - hooked up to an equally cheap Philips stereo (the nasty type with fake 'component' look, turntable on top, and fibreboard back). All this was free, of course.
There was nothing really wrong with the sound - it was a nice warm, quiet sound, nice for background music while I was working. But I have a corner desk and the giant fake woodgrain speaker directly ahead was a bit depressing. The other speaker(s) are two metres over my right shoulder
I decided to buy some small 'computer' speakers - I was impressed by Logitech LS21s that a friend bought really cheap (NZ$40) last week. But I decided to get something a little better just in case.
The Logitech Z-2300 speakers are a moderate price (NZ$179 here) - quite large satellite speakers and a giant sub - but I was a bit concerned that there were no tweeters.
So I ended up buying Jamo i300 speakers ($699) which happen to have an iPod dock.
Compared with the warm, distant feeling before, the Jamo sound is ridiculously clear. It’s like a live performance… I think I need a ‘quietness’ control (some amps have ‘loudness’ that makes quiet volume sound louder – well, I need the reverse, as even quiet volume is rather immersive!)
I shall probably get used to it.
