Greetings Fiat gang!

My name is Connor from Essex.

I've been a bit of an anonymous lingerer here for a little while... mainly spying on and reading (in awe I might add) up on some of the Cento conversions.

Passed my test just about this time last year, I had a Silver 1.1 Seicento SX (the Soleil edition with the funky roof) but I was a little bit mugged off as I bought without a third gear, so we sourced and replaced it in time for me to pass my test.

I sold that car in favour of a Black 899 Cinquecento, it feels faster than the Sei, my friend says this is due to the extra cylinder. The person before me had installed a centre mounted straight through exhaust, a lowering kit, an aftermarket wheel and a cool little air horn. I absolutely love it, its like driving a go kart around. What it lacks in power steering and rev-counter it makes up for in character :)

Basically in the next few months I was going to be looking at either a 1242 16v or 1.4 16v conversion, so I'm looking to accustom myself to the community and I'm seeing this is a good place to get an idea of what parts to source etcetera. I'm not that mechanically knowledgeable but I have 3 close friends who are, and enjoy teaching/helping me.

In case people are doing bits about themselves - I'm an avid West Ham fan, currently a part time coal merchant and I'm looking to join the forces later this year.

So yeah, hey guys :slayer:

Hi mate, I'm not sure how old you are, but if you are anything younger than 23 I would find out what the insurers would say about the engine change first... You wouldn't want an unexpected sting would you!

 hey k4rak, welcome to FF.

As said, ring some insurance companies for some quotes as age don't really come into it really, even if your 50 - if you just passed your test insurance will be expensive.

To attempt a conversion to 16v and not being mechanically minded i would suggest the easiest way to do it is probably to try find a mk1 punto 16v sporting donor car and buy the whole car complete, that will have everything you need on it. You can use the pulleys already on the engine, its engine loom and ecu and codebox etc etc. The wiring is easier if you start with a sporting cento but its be no means undoable from an 899 - several 16valvers on here were once 899s afterall. Then just sell off any parts left form the punto and scrap the shell - or maybe someone rebuilding a GT would buy the shell if its decent condition.

Best of luck, and keep us posted ;)

It's not fun talking about insurance but it's gotta be considered, mine is costing me a fortune on my 1.2 16v and I'm nearly 30 with 9 years NCB!
Really Dunc? My 16v cinq and my turbo sei insurance could only be described as cheap - just over 30 and not 9year ncb (6 i think i'm upto atm). How much is 'a fortune' if you don't mind me asking, mine cost under £300 each..

I get mine through HIC (Herts Insurance Company i think it stands for). They are brokers though, my actual policy this year is with Highway, part of Liverpool Victoria. But they clearly get deals as if i try go direct they usually are more expensive or even have refused to quote (back when i was young and had too many mods for them lol)

HIC though are brokers and they have seperate departments specialising in different types of car, mine is through the modified department.

As always though, ring them up - online quotes are never the best deal, never ever ever!!
