They patrol motorways, to help stranded motorists and such like, to free up the Police.

I don't think they are police as such, I think they are motorway equivilents to the council wardens. I hope

My partener Paul said that they are called Motorway Marshalls and they control the Motoway....
He also said that they also carry speed guns and that they can do you for speeding as on of my parteners customers got done for speeding by them.........

Surely they're impersonating the real police, which is illegal...?
The highways agency dont have the power to stop you and issue you with a ticket, but have the power to issue vehicle details onto police with the evidence they provide and then the police can then issue with a ticket.
This also includes reckless behaviour, dangerous driving etc

I suspect this may change later though as the police hand over more responsibility.
