hello, im after a bit of info for a non internet mate of mine, he wants to build a mk2 uno with a big engine, he used to own a 1.4 uno turbo:)

his question is whats the biggest cc engine that will fit into the uno with out mods ?

or is he stuck with the 1.4t

many thanks (y)

Well, I've seen a 1.7L diesel uno. It was the standard engine for the diesel version in india....

i´ve seen an 2.0 turbo i.e. in uno
sounds good:cool:
thats the sort of thing he's after doing, he doesnt mind minor mods but he's not reaaly tooled up to do anything major, he was hoping a croma engine would drop in:p - kinda low budget project, stripped out shell thing :)

The lancia 2.0 will fit but it wont 'drop in' there are loads of one-off mods required. Think custom engine mounts and drive shafts for a start.

Tom

i know someone who is selling a 1.6 16v turbo MK1 uno turbo, engine from a delta

For a non turbo Uno -

1.5 litre X19/ Strada/ Delta/ Regatta engine will drop straight in where the 1116/ 1299/ 1301 engine used to sit. The 1.6 Tipo engine should also drop in as it's based on the 1.5.

There is a guy in South Africa who fitted a 2.0 litre turbo 16v Jap engine into a Uno. Needed MAJOR modifications to fit though.

As Oldskoolmk1Turbo pointed out a few have fitted the 1.6 litre Delta turbo engine into a Uno. The Croma/ Dedra 2.0 litre turbo will go in though will need heavy modifications. Expect to rework bulkhead, inner wings, front suspension, drive shafts etc.

There is also a guy who fitted the engine and running gear from a 4x4 Delta Integra into a Lancia Y10! The whole car had to be re-built and re-worked though and cost a fortune.

For easy power you won't beat the UT. With a few choice mods you can get up to 150bhp easily. With serious mods 200bhp is possible (ask Dunc Uno Turbo !)

thanks for the info(y)

is the tipo engine 8v? and i take it the 1.4 turbo manifold wont bolt up:confused:

i think he'd like to do a 2.0L (especially a turbo) but it's weighing it up between making it too dificult a project and actually finishing it:idea:

personally i dont know why he doesnt do a mk2 fiesta 2.0zetec, but he's got this thing about fiat uno's:bang: i guess you guys know where he's coming from:):D

yes, i know the guy, Sarel (GTA-mods) he uses the MR2(toyota) engine :worship:

That's the one! (y) Must be a monster down the quarter mile, and a bit of a handful when the road gets twisty...

Yes, the Tipo engine is 8V. I'm not sure, but the 1.4 turbo manifold might well bolt up.

If you're thinking of making a 1.6 turbo engine bear in mind there is so much more than just slapping on a turbo charger. The 1.3/ 1.4 UT engine had a number of internal modifications (lower compression pistons for a start) compared with the N/A versions. It has been done before, but is a lot of work. Considering how much power you can get out of the 1.3/ 1.4 you'd be better off spending the money improving the standard engine.

A 2.0 Litre engine would also be a lot heavier (unless it was all alloy, the UT has a cast iron block), and to be honest if you start getting too powerful you simply won't be able to get the power down on the road. Dunc Uno Turbo was getting third gear wheel spins with his modded 1.4

A Fester is Fester, a Uno is a manic Italian buzzbox! A carefully modded 1.3/ 1.4 UT can still see off many a so called modern performance car. Just be careful of the handling ;)

In Europe, there was a 1.5 version of the Uno sold [never officially sold here but there are one or two about] and was called the Uno 75 and Uno 85. The 1.5 will slot right in, and if tuned propely, can yield over 160bhp!!
Problem with using a twincam engine is frontal weight. The extra weight makes the Uno understeer badly. Fiat tried the Uno in rallying using a 1600 Twincam, but said it was too nose heavy to be competitive.

My pick, for a big-engine project, would be a 1.6L Tipo engine (1580cc) rebuilt using forged pistons etc. and then made into a Turbo by using parts from a Mk2, hybrid turbo, engine management etc. I think that's the most cost-effective power in an Uno, without the need for any structural modifications. Definitely a case of building the engine for the car though, not something you can just drop in from another car...

Uno_jens (not sure if he's around here) has something magical like I've described - took a long time to make, but 300bhp? The last I remember he was still breaking driveshafts.

Failing that, stick with the standard Uno Turbo engine I reckon. I spent a long time agonising over Mk1 vs. Mk2 but in the end, my friend SteveNZ summed it up very well: "The best Uno Turbo is the one that's in good condition". ;)

Thanks for all the help and advise guys:cool:

at the moment he's on the look out for a base model uno with a decent shell to make a start on(y)

He does really want to go turbo more to fiddle with - and he'd like it to at least keep up with my transit:D

i'll let you know how he gets on and if it gets to the "interesting" point i'll post you up some pics:slayer:

I recall driving a 2003 Punto (basic 8V model) on the M4, in August 2003, and it was at top speed, the needle pointing to the very end of the dial (100mph). And a white Transit van went past! I couldn't believe that a van could go that fast.
