Punto (Mk2/2b) Big Gerry is new here

Hi all
I put Mk2/2b cos I thought I had a Mk3.
Anyhoo, I've got a question.
I need a gearbox for my 05 plate 16v 1.4 3 door Punto Sporting.
I ordered one from a breaker in Manchester. It arrived with a new clutch.
My mechanic says its the wrong one, that it's for a 1.2 8v Mk2 Punto. I told this to the bloke I got it from and he says that it fits. I'm no mechanic but the gearbox looks different and the clutch is 20mm dia smaller and will not physically fit the car. HELP.

Well clearly the supplies argument of 'it fits' is void in that is doesn't fit!

Go back and say "no it doesn't fit" and go from there

This is my dilemma! Who to believe. Does it fit? Who better to ask, than this forum.

the clutch is different - bigger on the 1.4 than the 1.2, but the gearbox should be the same if its like for like (5speed - 5speed or 6 speed to 6 speed if its the sporting)?

Whats wrong with your old clutch?

I don't think there's anything wrong with the clutch, but the gearbox mountings were totally knackered as was the gearbox. So, the idea was to replace the lot rather than have a clutch problem later.

it's a sporting! Does that mean it should have a 6 speed gearbox? The gear knob says different. I know I sound stupid. That's why I'm stuck.
