Surprisingly I agree with T on this

LOL...never saw this post :D

Anyway, yes Argo.....a good quality socket is needed for glow plugs.Snap on/mac tools will charge you £15 for socket but a good fit is vital. However as you are aware some glow plugs are a nightmare to access, puntos for example but with a little technique they aint too bad after you done a few.Nothing to be frightened of though & no problem to you mate (y)

Thanks for that Ian.

Just been down to order a plug and was told by the garage "You're not fitting just one are you? You should fit a set of four just like as if you were changing spark plugs." And then adds "Are you sure it's not the relay?".

I'm starting to think now that maybe I should pay for 30 minutes on Examiner.

What do you reckon?

Could easily do a resistance check on the plugs themselves,if you dont find a fault glowplug then consider taking it to dealer......unless your known to your dealer & they could quickly read codes for you;)

Great bit of advice that T1 (y)

Unplugged the heater plug and found YELLOW (pin 1) is open. I'd normally call this # 4 (next to the flywheel).

Changing it does look rather tricky seeing as it's not even possible to get your fingers anywhere near it. Looks to me that it might be just accessible with a special socket (also need to remove and replace connector) although I've a nasty feeling half the inlet manifold will need removing first

Any pointers ?

OK! Got a result on this now.

Local Fiat specialist fitted a new glow plug for £35 (parts & labour) (y)

However the sting the tail is that the warning light remained ON so it cost me another £30 for a session with examiner just to get the warning disabled

The really interesting (and annoying) part of all this is that Examiner can't even tell you which heater is faulty anyway - since it can only trace as far as the relay. This is a pretty dumb setup and if it happens again then I'm going to drive around for at least a week (after changing the glow-plug) to see if the warning message eventually goes.

Anyone know of anywhere else that stocks Glowplugs for the Jtd? I got the beep beep beep preheat fault, took it to Fiat, £62.28 ojn examiners later and they now want £13.14 +vat per plug and £49.93+vat for the heater plug control unit (relay!!) then a shed load of labour on top.
Any ideas guys/gals, i;l change it all myself, as i'm fed up paying Mr Fiat lots of money.:bang:

I think these are cheapest (thanks to PNL)

I also think you're being conned :(

Examiner will report the relay as faulty because it can't say which heater is faulty. Follow this thread and work it out yourself. As long as you can use a multimeter then it's dead easy to work out which heater is faulty.

The connector plug is numbered in reverse i.e
  • Pin 1 = Cylinder 4
  • Pin 2 = Cylinder 3
  • Pin 3 = Cylinder 2
  • Pin 4 = Cylinder 1
Personally I wouldn't even pay to have it reset as I feel sure it will reset eventually.

Any good garage should be able to verify if the glow-plug they've removed is duff (they glow red like an electric fire - so obviously the one they remove shouldn’t).
