My 1.4 powerflow was loud. plenty loud compared with my supersprint one on my 1.8
My 1.4 was from Powerflow, at Drivers in Charing Cross, Glasgow. I asked them to make it as close to oem volume as possible. They said thats IMpossible but they'll do their best. On my way home, i was largely on motorway/dual carriageway. The exhaust volume PEAKED at 70mph, and was to deep and powerfull, it made the left side of my head go numb, and my eyes began to water. I am not exxagerating. I had a look underneath when i got home to inspect my new baby, and noticed there was no middle box, only the big-ish backbox. So i called them straight away, and i was passed on to the guy who fitted it. his name was bill. he was also the guy i booked it in with and spoke to in their shop on the day, and who told me oem volume was impossible. Anyway, i explained the numbness and watering eyes, and he booked it in for the following week.
When i went back he told me that because it was a small engine, he didn't think i'd need the middle box, and just put the big-ish box on the back. I kinda thought that was daft but i guess maybe he gets chavs who want really loud ones. So because he had 2nd guessed me, they didn't charge me anything for building it, though to be fair all he did was slot smallish box in the middle. I guess its your luck who you speak to, and how clear you are. I am always over-specific, so i have plenty of come-back.
additional information
The other reason he didn't put a middle box in was because the rusty OE exhaust, (which he still had, and showed me) had a square box in the middle, and clearly every one of his silencers were mostly oval (some were round/cylindrical) and thats also why i got a small middle box. The exhaust was still amongst the loudest, but it was tolerable, and initially i quite liked it. i quickly disliked however, the way it rose in volume steadily with revs, peaking in volume at 70mph (normal cruising speed on dual carriageway and m-ways)
The Supersprint imo is sooooo much better, because it is loudish when you boot it, up to about 30mph, then settles into a nice reasonable sporty sound., unless you drop it a cog and boot it. but at 70mph its not really intrusive, and you can drive with the stereo at a fairly low volume.
Note that for 'custom' exhausts its guesswork on the part of the exhaust fabricator. Sometimes (often) they get it wrong, so make sure you are really specific, or get it written down before the work starts.
