i hd my powerflow put on monday. they said for £350, i would get my existing cat modified to be swappable for mot.
they put a silencer where the cat should be.
and a backbox.

im thinking if its borderline too loud now as new, then it will be too loud in a few months.

got twin upswept pipes out the back.

what would you guys do in this situation? i basically want another small silencr put in, but they will want another £80. pushing my exhaust price even higher. i feel iv already been ripped off.

yeah i did. im gonna phone them tommorow and say its too loud. but i know they will want more money. im stuck now as i have no other options.

dont know how helpful powerflow head office are??

well i thought 350 was ok when i thought i was getting de-cat with them tinkering with my cat to make it so i can swao them t mot.
also had my fingers crossed it wasnt gonna be too loud.

now, when the cat came off it was ****ed, not worth tinkering with, and it is i think too loud and gonna get louder with time.

i want an extra small silencer that is £80, but allowing for them not messing with my cat should they not add this out of good will??

plus £350 was very high to start with. i should have made a better choice at start but too late now.

After hearing my car with no exhaust system from the front pipe backwards....I don't think I will be getting a de-cat lol. It's VERY loud even just at idle. My brother couldn't hear me shouting something to him and he was stood right next to me! Didn't you say they made it easy to add the cat back for the MOT? If so...just put it back?

It's very possible I can help you on this one.

Just to get it straight, they put twin upswept pipes, a back box, and a box where the CAT was, no centre box ?

Secondly, exactly what did you ask for ?

The volume the system is when it's fitted is the volume it will stay. Any volume change will be minimal and the sound will get deeper if anything, any talk of it going quieter when it cokes up is BS.

Sounds to me like they have done exactly what you wanted.

Its not their fault it is louder. You should have had the exhaust without the decat first and bedded that in first.

Q: Why have a decat anyway?? Don't intend to sound nasty here but it makes the car no faster. It will only add about 2-3 bhp tops. It will make the exhaust louder and gruntier, will fail the MOT and you can be fined of the police do an emisions test.

As for being ripped off, Powerflow don't set the prices, the garage where you took it does. Mine cost £330 for middle section to backbox so your price is quite cheap. I would have to pay another £80 for a decat like you would.

I know that if the work was faulty then they would happly do the work and replacement for free but they have only done what you asked for so it will be a case of biting the bullet. Either put up with the noise, pay £80 for another decat pipe of pay to have your original cat put back on. I would do the latter.

Also I don't mean to sound nasty but if you thought the price was too high, Why have the work done?? They would have done you a quote before doing the work, I know I did with mine.

agree with you guys, but gonna phon them tommorow and try and make it legal and quieter for an extra £160-240 .

this exhaust is costing me too much, but my own fault i guess

Let us know how you get on, and be specific about what you want it to sound like etc. when you speak to them. If you still feel that you have been badly treated there are routes you can go down with Powerflow and I can help you with that but you need to try to resolve it where possible with the garage first. 350 is not over the top for a CAT-back (2 boxes) and a CAT replacement.

cheers barakka,

iv just been out in it again, i must admit it does sound nice. the problem is it is illegal.

after giving this loads of thought it is my fault for not getting cat in first place. could have done it for same price.

im gonna appeal to their good nature to see if they will replace the silencer (where cat supposed to be) with powerflow cat. their cat is £160, but iv had the silencer for 2 days, will they take it into account if i give it back. and say iv made a mistake in deciding??

how can powerflow help if at all in this situation??

An OEM replacement cat is about £100+vat. Or for about £180+vat you can get what is sometimes called a 'sports cat' but without the vastly overinflated price you'd get charged by a 'tuning' shop.

My 1.4 powerflow was loud. plenty loud compared with my supersprint one on my 1.8

My 1.4 was from Powerflow, at Drivers in Charing Cross, Glasgow. I asked them to make it as close to oem volume as possible. They said thats IMpossible but they'll do their best. On my way home, i was largely on motorway/dual carriageway. The exhaust volume PEAKED at 70mph, and was to deep and powerfull, it made the left side of my head go numb, and my eyes began to water. I am not exxagerating. I had a look underneath when i got home to inspect my new baby, and noticed there was no middle box, only the big-ish backbox. So i called them straight away, and i was passed on to the guy who fitted it. his name was bill. he was also the guy i booked it in with and spoke to in their shop on the day, and who told me oem volume was impossible. Anyway, i explained the numbness and watering eyes, and he booked it in for the following week.
When i went back he told me that because it was a small engine, he didn't think i'd need the middle box, and just put the big-ish box on the back. I kinda thought that was daft but i guess maybe he gets chavs who want really loud ones. So because he had 2nd guessed me, they didn't charge me anything for building it, though to be fair all he did was slot smallish box in the middle. I guess its your luck who you speak to, and how clear you are. I am always over-specific, so i have plenty of come-back.

additional information
The other reason he didn't put a middle box in was because the rusty OE exhaust, (which he still had, and showed me) had a square box in the middle, and clearly every one of his silencers were mostly oval (some were round/cylindrical) and thats also why i got a small middle box. The exhaust was still amongst the loudest, but it was tolerable, and initially i quite liked it. i quickly disliked however, the way it rose in volume steadily with revs, peaking in volume at 70mph (normal cruising speed on dual carriageway and m-ways)

The Supersprint imo is sooooo much better, because it is loudish when you boot it, up to about 30mph, then settles into a nice reasonable sporty sound., unless you drop it a cog and boot it. but at 70mph its not really intrusive, and you can drive with the stereo at a fairly low volume.

Note that for 'custom' exhausts its guesswork on the part of the exhaust fabricator. Sometimes (often) they get it wrong, so make sure you are really specific, or get it written down before the work starts.

just get ur oe cat put back on it it! i will gurantee it will half the volume.

didnt you ask them to make the exhaust so the decat pipe and cat can be swoped over for mot???

when you take it back ask them how the hell is it supposed to pass an mot if you cant change the cat over!!!

dont pay them anything more its not right you asked for something they agreed a price you didnt get it!!! say you will get head office and trading standards in the last thing they want to get is a bad rep!!!

ps i reccomend mr tyre in tamworth there work is spot on i have had them change the setup of my powerflow 3 times now and couldnt be happier!!! they even put the cat back in for me free of charge a whole month later!!!

@ash

they were gonna make the cat and silencer interchangable but didnt bother when we all agreed my original cat was rattling and knackered.

I think that i will think long and hard before i make my way to powerflow, as i do not want something too loud.

will leave cat on i reckon.

and i wouldnt mind seeing some pictures if you have any? :)

£350 for the system is very steep i had mine done at powerflow in swindon. originally i had it as a cat back system and this was only £220 then when i had the decat pipe fitted that was only another £60. it was loud enough.

y go to head office or powerflow... its a franchise company there are all independent... i paid £416 for my custom jobbie.... and its not loud at all its just right... take it back dont be snotty with them and just say that we agreed ud make it so i can swap may cat over and u might find hell sort it for free. if its to loud then yes u have to pay for another silencer but that will be like a 2 mins job for them cant imagien it being much :)
