Battery Problems

Quote sounds spot on but i would double check that it is the alternator. Get a multimeter on it. I recon its the voltage regulator but that could be built into the alternator anyway.

okay worth checking i guess, ive got a multimeter. What points do i have to connect it to, to check its defo the alternator?

Take off the minus pole of the batt, put the mulitimeter plus on the wire and minus on the minus pole of the batt.

Turn the multimeter on amper and measure, if my memory serves me right max consumption can be 0,03A, if its ower that something is draining the batt.

Pull out one fuse after a another and when the Amper. go under 0,03A on that fuse is the problem.

ok just tried it and i dont know if im doing somthing very wrong here but, i set the multimeter on DCA, im presuming that the A means amps? as the others choices were ACV, DCV , ohms sign meaning resistance or a diode test.

I disconnected the negative terminal of the battery and placed the earth connecter of the multimeter on the negative terminal and the positive part of the multimeter on the terminal of the battery, well i managed to make some sparks and a little pop noise from my multimeter so i can only presume im doing somthing very wrong

Ok, Im home now and have read all again.

Multimeter must go to 5Amper, the multimeter + goes on the cable and the multimeter - on the batt pole.

The max amper can be from 1-3mA.

The sparks can be due to wrong putting of the multimeter probes -SORRY
or

the use (drenage) is over the limit of the multimeter you have.

Try getting a Ampermeter or go get it measured.

may b my multimeter cant handle it, was only cheap and dont have an ameter so ill just trust the measurments that the mechanic took where the alternator was draining power from the battery

I dont trust anyone but myself. Not all Mechanics are truthful people. Anything to make more money these days.

i know wat u saying, i beleive this guy to be honest as hes done jobs for friends and for myself before. just to check im doing this right where do i place the positive part of the multimeter, i know its the alternator but where? on the alternator itself or the wire going to the alternator thats connected to the battery??? thanks
