Would probably be best to call the DVLA and ask would a new owner be liable for it.

You are responsible from the date of keeper change, so you need to tax or Sorn as soon as you buy it. Get a receipt for the purchase (dated), proof of Sorn when you do it, and there can't be any comeback.
I've done it several times, and there's never even been a question raised - with me, don't know about the former keeper!

that was my understanding too,
If it's a Bereavement sale, then I'm not so sure..
but in this instance it appears to be an agent..NOT the original "registered" owner.
