Got the EGR off. Soaked it in Mr Magic oven cleaner. Gleaming valve and throats – removed 2-4 mm carbon atherosclerosis. Car now running very smoothly. Doesn't sound like a taxi (as much).
Initial huge blow out as exhaust cleared oven cleaner and water from the down tubes. Then 100mph dual carriageway run. Back to the good old days.
That 1.9JTD is a great engine. But we're about to get severely punished for having a diesel (especially Euro 3s)

In what way?

Well, diesels will get taxed out of existence, unless you are Euro 5 up (even then you can't trust companies with their defeat settings).

They are considered absolute dinosaurs of the road.

The tax rates for older diesels aren't changing (at least, as far as I know) , the MOT rules are getting a bit more stringent but as long as you're not guffing smoke everywhere or running with your DPF bypassed/removed/modified you should be golden :)

Can you point me to any articles on the web that definitely state this will happen?

There's been lots of noise about it and some cities have (or will shortly have) a ban in place for anything EU4 or earlier, but I've yet to see anything other than unsubstantiated rumours to say that older diesels will be taxed out of existence. VOSA are getting tougher on bods who decide to play silly bu**ers with their EGR or Cat, but you've just got your EGR back into fine fettle by the sounds of it, so nothing to fear on that front.

Politically, it would be a very hot potato for any government to punish older diesels by way of higher road tax. They would be hung out to dry for apparently punishing the poor whilst leaving richer folk (who can afford shiny, clean new cars) unscathed.

I agree with you. You refer to the very legislative processes I was thinking about. I cleaned my EGR and reinstalled it. It has made a great difference to exhaust smelliness, power and idle issues. It's a bit fiddly. I also scrubbed in the metal pipes and sprayed a lot of oven cleaner and atomised water to rinse. Was worried I might have overdone it with the water. She was a bit grumpy starting up afterwards. After burning off the impurities she was humming.
