For future reference try tapping them into the caliper with a hammer before you start to undo them, it loosens the thread.

thanks, i'll remember that. manage to get some stud extractors on ebay for £2 inc p+p Also bought a 'super wrench' as recommended elsewhere on the forum. new hoses arrive, i expect it to be a pig to remove the hose from the pipe.
