Technical Axle weight Rating

Technical Axle weight Rating

Some time ago I was investigating the possibility of fitting 'wish-bone' front suspension to my '695'replica. To this end I contacted GAZ in Basildon (Essex) who make coil-overs for the 126. I needed to find the axle weights of a 500L in order for GAZ to calculate spring rates. My research came up with a total weight, inclusive of 4 people + 40kg of luggage as:--820kg. This splits into 360kg on the front axle and 460kg on the rear axle. I will concede that the 'luggage' figures (people + luggage) in the w/shop manual were calculated at 11st per person (Italians were smaller and lighter in those days!).

A quick search with Google and I found this. It corroborates closely with Hobbler's numbers. Bravo!

as promised....

It is from a N so also gives a good comparison as to how "Lardy" the more modern 500s became...:D:D:D

In both of the plates shown above, if you add the front axle load to the rear axle load, the result exceeds the permissible total weight.
Why is this?

And an N can be made even lighter….

if you clean all the 'patina' off. :D

Well Fiats do get lighter with age!!!

you can't beat Original Patina!!

The car was originally offwhite...
the outside is painted Dulux dark Orange..
but the under bonnet is a sort of green over white...
Not worked out if it is green paint or lichen!

It's mounted under the bonnet LHS just above the concrete

^^ Concrete?

Reminds me of a Fiat 600 I had. The sills seemed solid, a bit too solid when tapped.....

A previous owner had filled the rusted rear ends of the sills with concrete from the inside, then skimmed with filler and re-painted.

well as you know you should try to keep the front<>rear balance as per the factory specs, so I presume as the car became lighter as the front panel dissolved...
the previous owner decided to keep the balance by filling the lower part of the front space with concrete...
