Hi, please bear with me I'm new to this sort of thing. also I'm not very mechanically minded, so I am well confused. I am getting a awful grating sort of noise from the front of my Multipla. The only way I can describe it is it's very similar noise to when a C/V joint/Drive shaft is going. only difference being is C/V joints do it mainly when turning. My car does it when you drive straight or turning when it's under pressure. For example if I drive it like a granddad or some would say sensible, there is no noise at all. But if I put my foot down to say overtake or pull away, when I get to just under 3000 revs the noise appears in 1st, 2nd & 3rd. The confusing thing is, I can rev the guts out of her when parked up & it don't make the sound at all. I have changed the driveshaft this week thinking it was that but no. the strangest thing is. It all started when the car had work done for the MOT, lower arms and tie rods (I think they're called that). I have been back to the garage & had them all rechecked & they're all fine. the garage are as confused as I am about the noise. Can anyone help PLEASE!!

Hello, and welcome to FF,

does sound odd,
what year/ engine in your multi..??,

I would elevate 1 front wheel , and get it driving, to see which side it's emitting from,

sometimes louder IN cabin.. than outside ( esp. Diesels)

This might be too obvious but could it be a partially broken engine mount? Makes a terrible sound when engine is resting on subframe at low revs. Mine went a while ago over a viscious speed bump.

Hi, thanks for your thoughts, It's a 2002 diesel JTD 110. The noise is coming from the drivers side front, it feels just like its below the drivers feet (by the pedals). the confusing thing is it only does it when driving and when it's about 3000 revs or above. It makes no difference if it's going in a straight line or turning. The noise is still the same. I went to my local garage to see if he could find out what it is, I took him for a drive so he could here it. He told me to leave it with him. When I picked it up he told me it could be the gearbox. I said but that's on the opposite side of the engine to where the noise is coming from. He just said noise travels and without taking the engine apart he could only guess. This is why I posted this on here. Hoping that someone else may have had the same thing & could give me an idea what it was. What's more annoying is, I am wanting to sell it. as I've spent so much on it for the last mot, including a new clutch and duel-mass fly wheel. I just cant justify spending too much more on it. I don't want to sell a car with any faults or at least an unidentified one :)

There's a jack-shaft bearing for the OS drive shaft that's roughly speaking in front of the drivers feet. Might be worth a look.

Is the noise related to engine speed or road speed?

Hi, when you say related to road/engine speed, if you mean the faster I go the louder/noisier it is, then not really it's the same volume of noise but only faster if that makes sense, It's one of those noises that's hard to explain the sound exactly. I suppose it's like a grinding, scraping crunching noise very similar to driveshaft/CV joint. That's why I say it sounds like a driveshaft/CV joint noise. But that's been replaced (or at least the drivers side has). It only does it when driving at about 3000 rpm or higher. It makes no difference if I'm turning or going in a straight line either. Cheers

So the noise gets 'faster' as the car goes faster, and it doesn't matter what gear you're in? Does it make the noise say, coasting at 50mph with the clutch pressed to the floor?

Yes the noise gets faster and it only makes the noise when in gear driving under pressure, (3000 rpm). If the clutch is down or if its not in gear there is no noise. Thanks

I had a similar noise just before my gearbox shagged its input shaft bearing!
But the noise wouldn't come from under your feet..but it gets transmitted into the cabin through the gear stick.
Fingers crossed it's not that though.

Yea, the noise is definitely coming from the drivers side. No vibration just noise, it's so annoying not being able to describe the sound or find out what or where its coming from exactly. I'm hoping someone on here will see this and say........Oh yes I had the same thing it was the............. Fingers crossed :)

[after careful consideration, I have decided to get shot of it now as this noise can not be sorted, or even sourced. fed up with everyone guessing but no concrete solution. As it's got 8 weeks mot on it I took it for a new one and it failed on rear trailing arm has excessive ply. so it definitely up for sale/scrap. Thanks for all the comments.

Just in case anyone is interested, or has had the same problem.....I turned out that the rear gearbox mount was shot. The rubber was completely perished. So when I was told by so many people it could be the gearbox, in a round-a-bout way they were right. But I couldn't understand why the sound was coming from the drivers side when the gearbox mount was on the near side. Then it was explained to me & I felt a fool.
When the car is under pressure the weight load is put on the mount causing it to drop back, in turn causing the drive shaft to be running slightly twisted. Or words to that effect. So after getting rid of it (too bloody cheap) it turns out that for less than £60 it was sorted. Boy am I upset now. :-(
