Hi Guys

My name is Steve and i race (well sort of) a class 1 899cc fiat cinq in autograss a great car if only a little top heavy


The governing body are phasing out the cinq in class 1 in 2011 due to safety reasons, and risk of rollign the car due to its lack of stability.

Class 1 calls for basically standard cars with the interior and class removed with a roll cage welding in with seat etc.

My question to the owners of fiat cinqs is how can i make my car more stable an less likely to roll over,

for anyone that doesnt know Autograss is an oval track on grass / dirt over 5 laps (non contact) against 1l minis and 1l citroen AX's.

The idea of autograss and class 1 is to enable the cost of motorsport to be cheap and it is i brought my car & trailer for £300 off ebay and it costs me £8 to go racing (exc transporting the car and fuel) for anyones info im a member of leewood autograss club in manhester
Myself and a few other cinq drivers dont want to see the cinq be phased out and are plaanning on putting some ideas of how to rectify the issue, this may be a no goer fro mthe start but if you dont try yourll never know.

1 idea i had was to swap over the springs from a sporting cinq to stiffen & lower the ride.

i understand that you could easiely spend a fortune doing this but as previously mentioned the idea of the sport is to be cheap and available to all people. so the cheap fixes are the ones im looking for

Any help would be appreciated and look forward to hearing any answers back

I confess i know little about the sport, but you could fit an ARB from a sporting onto your cinq

It might help a bit as it would roll around less but on rought ground it might cause the car to 'pitch' about

It would be fairly cheap for a second hand ARB and maybe worth a look

Also do you have a strut brace? may be worth fitting one on the engine to stop that moving about?
 
On the other hand, I think an ARB will cause more problems than it solves on loose surfaces.

However, lowering is the answer.

The standard Cinq/Sei is 20mm higher than a Sporting as standard. You taken all the weight out so its probably another 10mm higher now.

Sporting springs are one answer and fairly cheap, although lower still would be better.

Rolling over could also be countered by widening the track width. Maybe some 10mm spacers, the 14" wheels on the sporting had these didn't they? Give you a 20mm wider track all round and certainly the front could be done for minimal cost, rears might need the arches rolling.
 
the sporting didn't have 14's on with the cinq, but it did have iirc 3mm spacers on the front.

the cinq shell is quite acomodating of wider tracks, the rear arches flare nicely and don't need rolling as soon as the sei ones would.
 
I dont think you are allowed to modify standard components in class one, if thats the case then you are very limited as to what you can do

if you were allowed to cut the springs [I doubt you would be able to fit aftermarket lowered springs] then you have to take on board the nature of the dirt track that you race on which means you do need some travel in the springs

I saw some of the leewood cars at buxton raceway last december, the AX's and Minis all appeared to run on standard height suspension and as a result of that they all lean over in the corners, using standard wheels and full height suspension means that all those cars would not really be stable if you got a wiggle on!!

The only way around it is to alter your driving style, if nasa want to phase it out [and lets face it, the cinq wasnt that popular was it?] then they will do if the ball is already rolling

You'll end up having to race in class 2.
 
can u fit 'spring restrictors' to the springs, pulling some of the coils together, thus lowering the car.. you're not technically modifiying a standard component.

but then again, if you had a sporting.. it would sit 20mm lower to begin with.. using standard component.s
