auto gearbox fault

My '97 Bava 1.6 SX auto has been playing up recently. The gearbox warning light flashes on start-up(especially when very cold) and the gearbox enters 'protect mode'. If I let the car warm a little and restart the fault is cleared. I've checked the fluid level and its OK. I've searched the forum for similar problems, and I'm not sure if anyone has a solution for the problem. If someone has please let me know. Having to drive around without 2nd gear can be very annoying and unnerving, especially at busy roundabouts! Thanks.

Preliminary action.....Checking oil level,

1.The g/box oil level must be checked with the engine and g/box at normal operating temperature while engine is running at idle. (g/box oil temperature between 70 -80 deg cel). So the car must be driven for an approriate period of time before the check.
2. With engine idling, gently move the selector lever from P to 1, then return to P....Check the level at marked HOT
3.Check the condition of the oil for burnt or black
4. Check also the idle speed of the engine....not too low.

Good luck

Re: Re: auto gearbox fault

Yep done all that. Fluid looks and smells OK. I'm thinking about renewing the fluid as a precaution. Any other ideas? Many thanks.

Re: Re: Re: Re: auto gearbox fault

Mileage 70K. Engine runs great. Bags of power. Gearbox runs great (when it works properly!). Up to date with servicing. I really don't want to have to take it to a Fiat garage for them to charge me the earth to tell me there's a fault with the box, and then charge me the earth to reset the ECU (credit card is maxed out - Xmas and all that)!

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: auto gearbox fault

For your additioanal information......reason for red light comes on when the following errors occurs:
1. error in Battery voltage ...so check the battery voltage..should above 13.volts while engine is running
2.error in throttle position sensor
3. error in selector lever positon sensor
4.error in main shaft rpm sensor
5.error in vehilce speed sensor
6.error in gear change selenoids (total of 4 selenoids)
7.error in pressure control selenoids...during engine is cold
8.error in transmission ratio
9.error in checking transmission of driving torque reduction signal
10. Fan faulty/fluid too hot
10.error in gearbox mechanism!

***disconnect the battery for over 10 seconds will delete the errors memorized by g/box control module

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: auto gearbox fault

Thanks. Looks like I will have to take it to Fiat or a specialist independant for them to take a look at it afterall. I know its not the battery - had that replaced last month - the old one died after a week of sub zero temperatures.

Auto gear box

If you go back a few pages you may come across a Marea owner by the name of Subija. He is an expert on Fiat auto gear boxes. E-mail him your problem. Another solution from some friends who drive an auto. Flush your ATF regularly and ONLY then refill. Also get a mechanic to check the fan that cools the gearbox--it may be faulty.

Re: Auto gear box

Thanks - will do. I don't think its a cooling problem. According to the Brava driver's handbook, a flashing gearbox warning light indicates a fault and the gearbox enters 'protect/emergency' mode. A steady warning light indicates the box is overheating. Mine is flashing. I will e-mail Subija about my problem and see if he/she can help. Thanks again for your help.

gearbox light problem

The problem as you described it is very similar to the problem I experienced on my Brava's gearbox about a year back. My particular problem was due to the gearbox gear position sensor (mounted on top of the gearbox unit) switch contacts becoming very dirty/mucky over time due to wear and tear. I carefully opened up the unit and had the "rotor" and contacts cleaned, gently polished and lubricated (Magnatec works very well) with a thin layer of lubricant, and it has been working fine all this while now. My hypothesis for the symptom you are experiencing is that the dirt and muck is causing the switch contact to become intermittent at times when the engine/gearbox is cold and which improves when it gets warm/hot as the muck will have a lower viscosity when warmed.

While you are on the repair job, check also that:

1)the electrical connectors for the gearbox unit are also in good condition and are not showing signs of corrosion, which you would need to clean up as well. I wrapped up mine connectors with some aluminium foil as added protection.
2) gearbox lubricant is sufficient and of good condition and quality.

Good luck mate.

Re: gearbox light problem

Thanks. I will check that out as well - thanks to everyone's help here, I've got a huge list of things to check before I head down to F**t.
Thanks again everyone.
