Hi DJW long time no speak. My first post on here me-thinks although I've been a member for quite a while.
Firstly your old Turbo is very much alive and well - presently hibernating in my garage in freezing cold West Yorkshire as the roads are so full of salt at the moment it would disolve in no time if I were to take it out.
My intention has always been to restore it to as near showroom condition as possible - as you know it was in excellent condition anyway so a perfect candidate for preserving.
Not done too much yet as we had our first child back in Feb so she's taken up most of my spare time. Managed to source loads of the parts it required though like fuel pump, full exhaust system, gear linkage bits, spare interior, steering wheel, bodyside/rear graphics, etc, etc, should hopefuly be able to dedicate more time and money to it over the next couple of months so all being well I should have it to a couple of events over the summer. Can't wait to get it back on the road - last real drive was the blast back from Edinburgh after purchase where it went like a train- so thats been my incentive for the last year!! Cheers for now.. Dave..

Hello Dave,

What a magic post there. Thank you for updating us.

I am in the process of restoring my standard wheels. I see in one of the photos (taken with flash, second photo in post #6) that you may have some familiar problems with the original lacquer/corrosion. I've found that brush-on paint stripper gets the lacquer off very effectively. Then you can wet-sand the wheels with 400-grit sandpaper, ideally with them spinning (i.e. by jacking up one front side with the engine idling in 4th gear). Double the sandpaper grit (800, then 1500) and finish off with metal polish.

I've recently discovered that for a well-treated car, it seems better to leave the wheels un-lacquered - maximum shine, no lacquer to trap water/cause corrosion, and an un-lacquered wheel seems to attract less brake dust. See attached pics of polished wheel with yellowed lacquer (that I applied two years ago), and partly-polished wheel without lacquer - notice how the one without lacquer has stayed cleaner (both started off clean, were mounted on the front of the car, and were subjected to ten laps or so of racetrack use, so you would expect both to have an equal amount of brake dust).

On the downside, you can see how the 'Speedline' lettering is no longer recessed - I had to sand quite a lot of metal off the rim to remove the corrosion.

Congratulations on preserving a Mk1 Uno Turbo and thanks again for your wonderful contribution to this thread.

-Alex

Thanks for the comments Alex. Yes my wheels are a bit of a state - they're on the list of jobs to do! Thanks for the info on refinishing them - I'll take it onboard for when I get round to them.. Regards.. Dave..

Cheers Dave, I'll try and get some pictures posted of it's present state next time I move it out of the garage. Appearance will have changed a bit since last time you saw it - new front bumper, no red stripe anymore, all bodykit removed at present, etc - could pass for a 3dr 45s at moment!!
When I removed bodykit/wing liners there was virtually no rust underneath so I'm planning to treat the little there is and get plenty of underseal and waxoyl onto it to keep it that way....
Next jobs are cambelt, replacing the fuel pump, fitting new exhaust system, and sorting an oil leak on the filter union assy. Then it's MOT time again! After that I plan to have all the dents and dings taken out of the bodywork before I fit the Turbo graphics and refit the bodykit.
Plenty to keep me out of mischief but will defo be worth it in the end..
Dave..
