I just found out today that my mk1 had colour coded bumpers and grill as standerd, but some **** has painted aver the perfectly good paint with black  Does anyone know how i can remove the black paint without taking off the original colour coded paint underneath. I got some off the grill with some thiners and a cloth but that would take forever.

No warranty, but maybe you should try caustic soda (NaOH), sticks well when applied with a sprayer/brush through toilet tissue. This should get you through later paints easily. But, remember - I have no idea about what it does to the original paintjob when left for too long  !!!

cheers all. im gona try that at the weekend charlieboys93UNO

I wouldn't advise using caustic soda. It's pretty nasty stuff, as well as quite dangerous if not handled correctly (do not let it contact skin, and do NOT pour water on top of it unless you want to risk an explosion). It's used for unblocking drains, and I used to use it to clean out the inside of my old two stroke motorbike exhaust. It's pretty vicious stuff and more likely to melt the plastic...

Another way of getting the black paint off and preserving the paint below is to use rubbing compound. Will take ages and a lot of work, but is not as abrasive as wet or dry paper.

Have you not tried seeing if you can 'peel' the black paint off? Maybe heat it up a bit and see if it comes loose with a plastic scraper?

Unfortunately there is no easy way of removing it unless you want to damage the original paint below.

As Charlie says, you'll simply need lots and lots of patience :D

Hi all. i have been everywher to try and find some paint to repaint emm, however i could not find a paint code anywher on my car neither could the man at the local fiat delership, so i thought im stuffed, then i had the bright idea of contacting fiat direct via ther web site and giving them the model, year, and color of my car asking them if they could suply me a color code for that model in that year. I was suprised when half hour later they replyed with a very nice email and two paint code it could be

Azzuro Met (881)

or

Polar Ice Met (872) over Blue Met (835)

So now armed with that i can go halfords and look at both paints and see from ther

I think my color code is on a sticker inside the boot hatch. Remember cheap paint is cheap for a reason... I use PPG only.

Do you mean to say that the man at ur fiat dealership didnt look in ur tailgate for the paint code?!? Almost every fiat i've ever seen (until abt 2000) had its paint code in the bootlid. I'd be wary of asking him for advice again...
