Hi everyone,

Right after sorting out my last problem I've decided to (with the help of some mechanically minded friends hopefully) to work out my Cinquecento.

It's the 899cc version and while looking through a lot of threads on here to do with tuning I got confused. So could someone please just explain to me what I would need to add just a little more power to the car (Just like 10bhp or something) as well as where to get them and good makes :)

I'm going to get my friend to help me give it a good and proper service before starting anything too as it needs one! The last service it had was terrible.

Im sure it might be around here somewhere if it is Im sorry and could you please point me in the right direction

Thanks :)
P.S. I will speak to my insurer about my plans and see what they say before I buy/do anything to it.

In percentage terms, 10bhp is about a 25% power increase. Which would give you around 50bhp. Which is less than a 1108.

There are few, if any, tuning parts available for the 899. Those that are still out there are likely to be expensive.

Do you see where this is heading?

Either get hold of a Sporting, or find one in a scrappy. Pinch the gearbox, gearchange remote and cables, driveshafts, alternator, exhaust (complete) and anything else that takes your fancy. Then find a Punto 60 and pinch the engine and starter motor. Fit a Punto 75 cam (if you're very lucky, some P60s have the P75 cam) and a suitable throttle body. Ta Da! You've nearly doubled the power output for less than the tuning bits required to produce that extra 10bhp from the 899.

a bit off the subject but has anyone tuned a 899 with good results?
if so what did they do? as it may help people who don't want to change engine and just want a little more go.

So, your saying is cheaper just to go buy a Sporting? :)

Cause id imagine the cost to fit and get all those parts and the Insurance would be higher than a Sporting since the Cinq would be modded

Plenty of people have tuned the 903 version of the 899.

The 899 is just a sleeved down 903, you can see the sleeves when you take the head off.

However, you have a Cinq, so thats at least 11 years old, so I think that even returning the car to its original spec will improve performance over what you now have.

Before doing anything do a wet and dry compression test. If there is a significant difference between wet and dry, you're going to beed to get the bottom end sorted, but if not carry on as below.

Pop the head off.

Skim (increased compression will improve performance).

While its in the machine shop get them to recut the valve seats.

Clean the valves and lap them in.

Get an UNO 45 rocker shaft assembly. The manual tappets will allow you to get the valves opening corrrectly.

If you want to go further, some porting won't go wrong.

Cheers

Depends a lot on your age/insurance record/company. It's true that most insurers are fairly lenient on mods, less so on engine swaps. But -- if eventual performance is your aim -- the Sporting is a better place to start from.

I worked on my 899 head a little, it is hard though as you cannot reach very far into the intakes at either end.
What i did was plane the head as far as you dare ( I had a blown gasket).
Get rid of some sharp corners inside the head with a dremel on the intake and the exhaust side.
Really clean out the exhaust ports.
Make the valve guides on the intake side conical (you could even grind the sticking out bit off I guess)
Make sure the valve seats an the intake port are not overhanging anywhere.
Make sure the bolt that goes through the intake is level with the intake floor.
Lap the valves 'till you drop.
Make sure the whole intake tract is devoid of any steps.

All of this made my engine run sweeeeet (she now goes 150Km/H ;))
But the again, a normally refurb head would probably have done the same...but I had fun!

you could weld some alu on the squish side of combustions chamber to increase compression even more I guess but that is a serious mod!
