1997 Fiat Marea 1.6 16V weekend, 90k mls

Hi all,
after changing the faulty battery the old lady won't start anymore.
What happened so far ? The battery was totally empty one day, the marea was started with starter cables and run without any problems. But even after a one hour run the battery was not charged so we changed it. With the new battery she started but run very out-of-round, felt as only three sparks worked. Next day she did not start any more. We changed the sparks and the fuel filter - when you try to start now the fuel pump works, the engine gets fuel, all the sparks are working, but it does not start.
Any idea what else we could check ??
thank you for your suggestions !
regards
Rob

is the orange key code light remaining illuminated?

aside form the new starting problem, it sounds like your alternator was not charging the battery previously. either that or there is a constant drain that is discharging the battery. once you get it running do a voltage test on the battery with a multimeter and engine running. it should be 14.4v with no electrics on, and 13.99v minimum with all electrics turned on (fan, demister, radio, lights, etc). any less and your alternator is not charging the battery sufficiently.

Hi Jug,
the orange key symbol does not remain illuminated, I tried several keys.

The battery could not be charged with an external charger, so I think it was just a faulty battery - not really surprising as it was six or seven years old.

What do think about the idle control valve ? Tried to check it already but just damaged the screws ...
Or maybe the fuel injectors ? The fuel pump is working but hard to say if it reaches the engine.

check your injectors by measuring their resistance (instruction can be found by searching using the terms injector resistance multimeter)
