Was on my way back home from MITcar, only 5 minutes from home, over the back roads of West Yorkshire. Changed down to second gear to go round a tight bend, accelerated out and changed to third. As soon as I hit third, BOOM! Smoke and oil pooring out of the back, bits of metal flying around :(

My first thought was big engine failure, but it was still running. Then I looked at under the car and it was pooring with oil, with a trail down the road behind. On a better look, it is a gearbox failure. A hole has been ripped in the casing causing all the oil to come gushing out :( Got the RAC out, also a possibility of a blown differential :( just got in, dont really know what to do with it, is it worth repairing??

Thanks for the link, didnt see that when I searched for it last night :( Im gonna ring a few local garages and see who will take it, then get the RAC out to pick it up again and tow it. Il report back when I get a diagnosis! I originally hoped it was just a split pipe, but looks more serious than that now :(

Sorry to hear this Adam :(

Lots of people moan about the spring issue but that's like a stroll in the park compared to a blown diff

It's due I believe to a locating pin which falls out of one of the shafts so you can't even blame it on poor lubrication.

If you have a good relationship with a local Fiat dealer/garage then might be worth seeing if they're prepared to lodge a claim for say part of the costs.

I think it works better if you do it through a local Fiat independent on the basis that if the labour rates are lower then there's more chance of the claim being accepted (that's my theory anyway)

I think the local specialist I use, arranged a gearbox claim but that was a year or so ago now.

Ok il see what the guy at this garage says, ive only lived here for 2 months so not quite sure wheres best for it at the moment. Might be considering breaking it if it comes out at a stupid price, its not worth it :( Might go and buy myself an Abarth GP instead.....

I think someone on here will be after your Connect Nav ;)

Personally, I'd find a gearbox/diff from a scrapyard (make sure you get a basic warranty) and arrange a fixed price fitting via local specialist.

lol cheers Argo :p Connect Nav is the most valuble part of the car at the moment  I have found a 1.6 for breaking in Hull so im hoping we can get the parts off that if thats what it needs. The guy at the garage seemed keen to know all about it :)

Can I fit a connect nav in my i.2 in place of the cassette thing???? I am not bothered about the sat nav just thinks it fits the dash nicely. Sorry about the car though

Well, got another call from the garage this evening.... They cant source a gearbox :( Ive got one lined up from a scrappy, but I think the time has come to move on from the Stilo :( I cant afford to put more money into it. I really wanted to replace it with an Abarth, but I cant insure one easily so thats not going to happen :(

Well got it back this evening :) All was well as i left the garage, but as I got further down the road, a nasty squeak started from the front. I had a look underneath, nothing nasty to the eye. While it was in the garage, they replaced the front brake pads and discs.... So I jacked it up, wondering if it was the brakes, tried to spin the wheel, and hardly any movement. So I therefore assume the noise is from the brake pads catching the disc....

Is it ok to drive like that or should I sort the pad out?? Really need it to get to work in the morning....
