Technical another automatic gearbox problem

my 500l broke down while shopping ( the battery was completely flat when we returned to the car ) i put another fully charged battery on it but when i put the terminals on the hydraulic pump for the auto gearbox kept running . i drove the car home with the pump still running and a red exclamation light on the dash also display saying limited gears . when i got home i disconnected the battery and checked the hydraulic fluid level it was a little low . i have now topped it up with the correct fluid but the pump still on continuous when the battery is connected and lights still on dash what could be wrong with it
