L3 UNO is expecting her MOT come the 23rd of july, and the failure is going to be massive.
Having run her non stop for a year, lotting up 25,000miles with very little love.

It has got to a point where she needs more than Katie can afford, so following a purchase of a renault 5 with very light accident damage for £100 with ticket, katie will be moving on to "better things" while she still learns.

Anyway onto the known Failures.
two front springs Cracked.
ineffective shock absorbers all round.
Due new pads very soon.
Sparadic horn.
Very occasionally the indicators will work.
Cracked manifold has progressed to a hole.
and my cobbled together exhaust has few blows.
Oh and a cracked screen that i must replace too.

Its got to point where she needs a good going over. but as it was katies learner car can't really deviate from standard, but then with uprated parts being same if not cheaper be daft to fit standard. and i'm not going to all the effort just to fit some second hand stuff.

So katie is away for week or two so it makes sense for me to buy anything i can find on ebay and crack on with it and hopefully bag an mot.

So there we go, start of a project report.
L3 UNO will live again but to as once was.

So a quick Wish list.

Lowering springs and Shocks
New wheels. 14" or 15" alfa wheels fngers crossed
Discs and Pads.
UT Rear beam
Punto 1.2 16v sporting to break, well be better than just changing a manifold on the 1.0l

And maybe if i can get a fiorino cheap;
Fiorino front end conversion.
hopefully UT style anti roll bar.

oh and more hours in the week, and money to do it!

I know you don't want to fit any second hand parts, but if you need any standard spare bits for it, let me know and I'll have a look in the shed. Parts from a Mk2 carbed 1108cc Uno45.

Was the wish list bits that you need, or just want to fit and will be spending lots of cash, quickly? :D

Also, will there be lots of pictures? :D

Ja shame with these old jellies one realy need to check the expenses, it quickly rivals what you could get for the car had it had 0km on the clock even. Especialy over here in SA where there are still plenty of them with post 2000 registations. I was actualy parked next to a 2003 model today, also in white, and I have to say it looks a bit blander without the door and wheel well moldings, and the spoiler, not to mention the old school looking black bumpers. Even so my car is about 1 sprayjob away from costing me money if I were to sell it now. Oh well not every day you can drive a car for 7 years and resell it at the same price you bought it for... take in mind I spend a few grand on suspension and steering as well as a new top gasket and associated skim. I'd rather have the car be full house restored and get a few cents less than i bargain on than selling it for next to nothing in less than perfect condition.

I've been preoccupied this week with suspensions. More specifcaly why the Uno has such tall front wheel wells, and such small wheels.... Appart from the smaller wheel requires less torque to rotate thing I was also thinking about the whole driveshaft, which on a taller wheel would be at a slight incline, yet still powering the wheels through the CV joints at a small loss of efficiency as opposed to a solid straight shaft....

I get the idea, that in designing the car they didn't start from a chasis and work their way up to a car, but took the largest, tallest cabin they could build without any space between the seats, and slapped some wheels on it. That being said I was raised on rear wheel drive....

I think the Turbo model in stock form is as sweet as these babies need to get. Then blow your dough on pimping that paint job etc. so you can keep it for another 15 years

Well some how i've worn out the two front tyres in 25k. one quite badly on inner edge, that wasn't the one i did a wishbone on. so a tracking issue

Removed the caliper, and as expected the pads were fag paper thin. siscs look good enough though.

from mot point of view the suspension will probably be ok with new springs but its doesn't feel great.

the exhaust manifold gave me headache this afternoon. couldn't get the nuts off the downpipe. and the landa sensor was a right pig. finally got off so could drop the manifold down and cut the nut and studs off.

Manifold was in 5 pieces, ie the bottom lugs were all snapped.

My spare manifold needs a replacement stud which i need to find someone to fit!

trying to secure bumper, the square headed bolts, grr who's bright idea was that!

think i'll re fit the standard exhaust for mot.

Anyone know if the punto uses bigger calipers. as its at top of the wish list.

amd where the hell do i find an uno rear beam!

Hiya fella
I've got a full set of -35mm Apex Springs I'm about to take off the FuCT Fiat
They were as new [bought and left in shed] when I bought them off here last year.
Fitted to FuCT FiAT last August and run with them since then
I'm changing them for some -60mm ones I've got off TurboCollective
You can have the -35mm's for £25 . . . . .

Hehe, I have 13" alfa alloys (with holes around it), but you're paying the postage ;)

On that note, what is general opinion on those wheels? Are those worth refurbishing? (as I find them pretty ugly, but that's maybe just me?)

I dont like them either to be honest.
They just look like thicker standard steelies-with-original-hubcaps to me :(

I have arranged to see that car this week.
Not exactly the wheels i'm after. Ideally the Delta 7spokes 14", or some 155 Compos in 15"

Current tyres are 165 70 13s so not as bad as stock.

Joolz, cheers for offer but got some -35 springs with shocks on there way for £50. only Gmax. but atleast shocks be shorter rather than retaining the stock ones. got some UT -60 ones for rear if it dont sit level.

Trying to relocate the washer bottle atm so can get my strut brace on. not sure it will make much difference tho.

Also been down to the fiat dealer to get some of those bloody sqare headed bolts you secure bumper with. however MOT friday and they can't get them till monday so going to rob a couple out of the other unos if ican. unless anyone knows where i can get some pronto!

Got some nice meaty pads on now. Bit of pain to get the pistons back enough but some brake cleaner and they finally freed up.

got to drive it thurs down to autoglass to do screen as they couldn't come out for 2 weeks.

oh and i still can't get to bottom of the intimitant indicators. grr

NO worries matey

dusty in the steering column stalk switch?
That's the reason why our flasher relay is constantly clicking . . .

Best of luck

Slowly making progress, hopefully will be done for mot tomorrow afternoon.

Lowering kit turned abot half hour ago but too late for me to get on and fit it now.

Refitted bumper though at somepoint must have snagged horn as had to rewire it.

wirebrushed the sills and the rear crossmenber.
Sills are not holed, but scalled so some repair will have to be done somepoint this year.

indicators seem fine after swapping relay, but sure be sods law will play up on mot.

brakes bedding in so no real improvement yet.

we will see!
wish me luck

Re: PASSED, another 12months on L3 UNO

Well she passed!:)

Few advisorys to take care of, the Handbrake as usual only getting 14%
despite new shoes and adjusters,

And the front drivers lower ball joint. oh yet another wishbone to change grr!

but still its through again. just need to put the bigbore back on.

suprising how much topend decreased, and the fuel consumption went up too.
gone from averaging 42 to 28mpg.
plus will only do 80 flat out as apposed to 96.

Can't beleive it would make any difference but it has. might have something to do with hot weather too.

Still least now i can crack on the the not so essential jobs such as lowering!

Well after i know the result of the 5doors MOT on tues!

Good work (y)

Are you saying it actually went BETTER and more economically with a big-bore exhaust fitted? What engine is it - if it's the FIRE 999cc I'm very surprised it made any difference  But good on you if it has - post some pics so we can see exactly how big-bore it is...

need to find a camera, but then i'll be on the job. and a quiet, i mean private road to show difference.

now i'm back in dorset not up and down the motorway fuel economy seems about the same just darting between town and village.

on another note finally heard back from garage who are doing the mot on the 5 door, not so gd news. failed on a crack in the two into one pipe. non cat mk2. and a very very small hole in sill under drivers door. when i dropped it off it was literally the size of a 5p coin and not a hole at all.

Bloody mot hammers. so if anyone wants a 5 door i may be selling soon as i can't really afford to pay them!

Like Alex I'm still a little confused as to what is causing the difference. Is the performance/ economy WORSE with the after market back box or with the standard back box? Also, with the cracked manifold that will have an effect regardless of what back box you have fitted.

Two into one pipe is cheap to buy new (and even cheaper second hand), and the hole in the sill sounds small enough to need little work with a welder. That's not much needed doing at all to get your Uno through its MOT!
