Hi all
1975 500 R
I have read about poor shifting and bushes on the forum so decided to have a look in the tunnel.

Do I have a missing Bush from my gearshift rod in the attached pic looking down the gearstick? I can see a hole in the bracket where the rod passes through but no Bush .
Thanks

Definitely looks like the bush is missing. There should also be another one at the gearbox end where the rod exits the body

That’s good news , ive marked it in my pic now where I think the Bush should be . My Haynes doesn’t show anything for some reason!
Would anyone have link which would show me how to get the gearstick bracket mechanism wotsit out as there does not seem much room to work inside the tunnel ,
Thanks again

My 500 Haynes manual has an exploded diagram of the gear lever mechanism on page 106 and shows the two bushes on the rod. At the gear lever end the bush fits into the large hole you have highlighted.

This is very greasy one showing the bush in place. The gear lever itself has been removed from this one and it is the later 126 version with the anti rattle spring

Thanks Toshi ,
Your advice is priceless , I was going to ask about the spring next as mine does not have one but you already answered that one?
I just ordered two bushes and new lollipop, I will be attempting to remove the assembly as soon as they arrive.
I did take out the front tunnel cover screws but the thing won’t budge ,
I may have to break out persuading stick ?

Are you aware that the gear-selector 'box' is held in by 2 x 13mm (head-size) bolts---you will see them on the right hand side of the central tunnel, level with the gear-selector. Thes bolts are also use for adjusting the selector 'box'.

Yes , this is what started my quest to find out if someone was missing, I tried adjusting the selector box back and forth numerous times, each time it would make a couple of gears better and a couple worse , vise versa depending on which way I adjust it.
I’m hoping it’s just the fact that bushes are missing and not anything more serious at the gearbox end.

I was given great advice from Dave Toshi 975 a few weeks ago when I did the same job:

The front part of the tunnel is a pain. There are four tiny fasteners on the floor and the fact that it also carries the hand-throttle mechanism can make things awkward. Removing the parcel shelf helps and after you've moved it forwards and upwards you just need to push the tunnel towards the passenger side and you be able to slide the mechanism forwards.
