Grande Punto alternator problems

grande punto 1.4 8v 2010
has anyone one had a problem with rain water and their alternator,
when it rains heavy and the car is parked up i get problems with the battery light coming on and staying on, i lose the power steering for a short while, this has now happened 3 times, called the rac out today and they say that because the output is 11.7 amps i need a new alternator just went to start it and starts fine and light stayed off for a about 10 mins, stopped and restarted again stayed off for about 10 mins , could the rain water from the drain be causing this problem

This is a known problem, search for it on the forum. Loads of people have had this issue.

The scuttle drain can direct rainwater at the alternator..
by 2010..I thought this was fixed

My 2012 has a 'dogleg' tube that side
