Just bought a 1997 Bravo 1.8 16v HLX and it came with a K&N induction kit. I am looking for a new airbox but want to know if all Bravos are the same or do I have to get one off the exact same engine?

there are differences, i think any 1.6 or 1.8 airbox is the same, others are different. the 1.4 has airbox on other side so that wont fit, but other models could be made to fit even if they arent exactly the same.

1.6 models are very common in scrapyards so you'll find it easy to get an airbox from one.

to remove the airbox you need to remove part of the wheel arch and lower it through the hole.

why do you want the standard airbox instead of the K&N?

Just like he said, they suck in hot air which loses performance, i have never liked them. Ok for noise but performance wise just a waste of space. Standard airbox with a performance panel filter is ok...

The bottom half of the airbox is still under the bonnet, the top should just come off in 2secs... Cheers, ill try get one tomorrow :)
 
Right here is a picture of my engine bay, as you can see if has the K&N fitted with 2 cold air feeds going to it... I don't fancy taking the bottom of the airbox out (as it will be a ballache) and was wondering if anyone had any tips for shielding the filter etc...

How come you are removing the k&N ? Look how far from the engine it is in particular from the exhaust. It has been correctly installed with a decent cold air feed. So will not be loosing any Bhp. In fact you will probably be gaining about 1 or 2 bhp over standard and will certainly be getting better throttle response. I would give it a clean though. :)
 
Well after a drive when I open the bonnet and put my hand on the filter it feels very hot so im assuming its sucking in lots of hot air from the engine...

Nothing will be better than an enclosed airbox...
 
Enclosed airbox is not always brilliant. It is restricted by how much air can pass through the filter. Even with an uprated filter air has a limited ability to get in. Am suprised it is getting hot though. This is pretty much the location of my coupe K&N air filter and it is running 250bhp. Maybe too close to the rad top pipe. Or possibly the filter is heating itself up through the friction of air passing through it?
 
wouldn't mind trying to make some kind of a heat shield for it but i just cant think of any ideas... Has anyone else made something like this?
 
Right I have just thought of an idea (may sound stupid)...

You know when a dog comes out of the vets sometimes wearing something around its neck so it cant bite itself (like a lampshade)?

Well imagine something like that but made out of aluminium which could go around your airfilter possibly shielding the engine bays heat... :slayer:
 
I made one for my renault 19 16v. I cut up an old stainless kitchen peddle bin. Now those engines do get hot...

If I were you I would sit the filter in the airbox further into the wing.

with a plastic jar you can make an airtight container for the filter, i once used a plastic peanut jar with a screw top. it didnt look great but it did the job perfectly.

there is no point having a deflector, you need to fully isolate the filter from the air in the engine bay and provide an air source that comes from outside the engine bay.
