Has anyone come across this problem before.

Yesterday I notices that when accelerating in my 57 Bravo 1.9 multijet, it sounds like air was escaping from somewhere behind the dash on the passenger side so this is coming from the engine bay.

This only seems to happen when the turbo kicks in as at low revs, nothing happens and again when I get up to speed a release the accelerator, it goes away.

I'm hoping that this is not a turbo problem but it seems it might be the case.

So, has anyone had this happen before and if so, what was the cause? Just wanting ideas before I get it to a garage later this week if needed.

Cheers

punto's down here have a habit of developing cracks in their boost pipes around the clamps

I should get this checked out. Been a while but I don't use the car much at all. Really hope it's not the turbo but now think I need to change the EGR valve and it might all be related, or it's all starting to go wrong

mY 2008 1.4 tjet 150 just started doing the same thing. No lights on, but loss of power on acceleration and strange air noise. Suspect leaking pipe somewhere but I am in Greece at the mo with few tools and no ramps so going to have to be carefull on the drive back to the UK.

man at the garage thinks it might be a split pipe to the intercooler or similar. It's in on Friday for a full look a repair so will keep the thread updated.

He has ruled out the turbo as he thinks it would be a different noise a lot louder then it is.

Will have to wait and see

Got the Tjet back from Greece with no problems, still not as powerfull as before but returned 41mpg over the 1700mile trip, still no lights on. Got it over my pit, checked all pipes, can't find any splits???

any further developments on this problem? someone on another thread has suggested the exhaust from the cat back, but i cant see this causing sufficient back pressure to be the problem?

I've got a similar noise on my 150mj at the moment. Gonna have a look at the hoses later and see what I can find.

Had the same, replaced turbo, and looks like it was part of the manifold had a crack. This at 50000km. Also noticed lack of power, felt a bit mushy on boost, and a new whistling noise...

Are you sure this is not just the air escaping from the bypass valve, is it a new sound that didn't existed before? My car has always sounded a bit funny upon heavy acceleration from low RPM and I am pretty sure everything is fine with the turbo and the hoses.

Edit: wow, just realized the original post is one year old :D

I have had exactly the same problem. It was the boost pipe coming from the intercooler on the passenger side.

The pipe had a split in it. So once the revs got up and the turbo spooled up, the pressure released through the split in the boost pipe. A new pipe has sorted the problem, plus the boost from the turbo actually gets into the intake.

Happy car 👍
