Air Con on its way out?

Air Con hasnt been running to well and was getting a bit smelly to, had it re gassed and some perfume stuff put in when I had a service the other day.

My dads mate who did the service and cambelt changed the oil in it or whatever, but said its getting a bit tight and rusty, he said running it might revive it with the new gas and oil.

It seems to really be mauling the engine and is really noisy to, Im not sure whether this is normal and I havent noticed before because it hasnt been running right for a while or whether something isnt right with it?

How much would a new system be? Would I it be a good idea to get one from a scrappy? How much would that be?

Its a Y reg 2001 JTD.

Cheers

Aircon compressors are different for most models inc the JTD, you will need one from a JTD. I think Fiat charge around £500 for a new compressor. JTDs are rare in scrapyards, they are full of 1.2s and 1.4s.

My aircon pump makes a chirping noise when running from cold, but eventually disappears when it warms up. I reckon the bearings may need greasing or the acutal part that clicks the compressor on and off could do with some oil. Mine doesn't smell either.

When you regass aircon you need to ideally have the old stuff removed and fresh gas and oil pumped in. Aircon pipes and internal fixtures need lubricating all the time hence why you need to run aircon even on cold days etc probably several times a month to keep everything lubricated.

If you do goto a scrapyard and find one and you remove it, tell them its an alternator off a fiat. You'll get it much cheaper normally.

If its rusting, you need to change the waterseparator filter for the aircon - its tube shaped and its around 45quid here. Its function is to get the water out of the gas system to prevent the compresor to rust.

Just driving back to work from my dinner hour, flicked it on to see how it was doing.

Noticed a cloud of smoke behind me so turned it off quick and it went away. Got to work and opened the bonnet left the engine running and flicked the air con on again and when it kicked in it didnt sound as clunky and the blowers where freezing! colder than Ive felt it before.

Not drove it since to see if it since to see whether its still mauling the engine the same though.

What might have happened?
