500 Aftermarket stereos and proxy alignment

Hi folks

Possibly a bit of a basic question...

I've been asked to help with a car (500) that has had an aftermarket stereo fitted. It's all working, including steering wheel controls etc, but the mileage is flashing. Presumably because the body computer still expects to see the original stereo which is now missing.

Before I wade in with a proxy alignment, is there a risk this could "align" things so that, as well as the "old" unit being written out, the new unit is not recognised either, meaning all the CAN functionality (steering wheel controls in particular) are lost for ever....?

There's always a risk when you play with programming

Just to complete this for the record, I needn't have worried - a proxi alignment worked fine without losing any of the aftermarket unit functionality.
