Technical adjusting multipla handbrake

hey folks
my multipla handbrake now needs pulling up so high I catch my tops and rear-end when I get out of the car!

How does hubby adjust the handbrake to it does not have to be pulled up so high.

If you take off the bottom cover of the handbrake lever. There is a screw there you can adjust by hand.

My handbrake now operates only when the lever is really high up so I need to make adjustments also.
Do I let the handbrake off then adjust or should the handbrake be on and in it's highest position?
Can I over tighten it or do damage?

Adjust with the handbrake off.
Do it up until it comes on firmly after 3-4 clicks on the ratchet (don't hold the release button when you test it).
