Accelerating probs

Hi all
I'm having probs which are more annoying than anything else.
I'll list the symptoms....
There is no acceleration unless I let the revs build in first and then the turbo will kick in....
If I'm traveling up tru the gears with no acceleration of note when I get to 90km,the turbo will only kick in if I shift down to 4th from 5th,then back to 5th,whereupon the turbo kicks in with a big puff of smoke.But as soon as I ease of the accelerator,no turbo and the speed drops to 80km.
Also when traveling uphill there is just no power whatsoever.
I was advised it might be the lamnda diesel catalyst exhaust sensor.
Any ideas?
