I have a JTD but fancy something with a bit more grunt, had Vtec Prelude in past. what are the abarths like? they look a bit plain jane, but are they a q car?

Mate... forget the V-Tecs, seriously. They rev like hell and make a lot of noise, but they've nothing in the way or torque and the produce their peaks right at the rev limiter, so you're constantly hammering them. The Abarth being 2.4 five cylinder is an entirely different ball game. The Abarth produces slightly less power than say a civic type r but you get more torque and I'd wager that power and torque was across more of the usable rev range.

The Abarths are fairly subtle styling wise, albeit they've obviously got some subtle Abarth badging. There isn't really anything style wise to set it apart from the sporting models with the body kit, true. The Abarths do tend to get different alloys though. The older pre-facelift Abarths do get a fancy colour instrument display on the dash.

It's the motor that makes the difference. Its a much, much smoother ride being five cylinder and of course the noise it makes is like Beyonce giving Shakira intimate pleasure.

I've always looked at them as being an italian / euro muscle car hot hatch. The big lump means they're not the most lively in the corners. Don't take that to mean they don't handle though - thats by no means the case. They are absolutely a straight line monster though.

Go and test drive one - i think you'll be convinced. If you're going from a 110bhp diesel to a 170bhp petrol five pot you're gaining over 50% power.

Frankly, if a Stilo Abarth doesn't excite you I'd recommend you buy a Nissan Micra.

Thanks for the feedback, I would point out I have had a jag xj6 3.2 straight six and I also own a lots esprit turbo. But get your point about a 5 cylinder engine. I just wonder how a tuning box on the JTD would compare? I read you can get about 150bhp?

Oh yeh the common rail diesel engines tune up well. I would say 150bhp is achievable, yes. It still doesnt add the 5th cylinder or the noise though. The later 16v jtd multi-jets run 150bhp stock and can tune up to around 200bhp. They do get beastly.

If you want a five cylinders and want diesel - try and pick up one of the Alfa 159 2.4 jtdm. Dont get the very first ones (200bhp), pick up one of the 210bhp examples and that'll remap up to over 250bhp. They're a storm.

It might be personal preference, I've owned a couple of the 16v jtd m-jet motored cars and I still have my Abarth. To me a petrol motor will always be a more fun and sporty drive.

I dont get the same thrill out of abusing a diesel in the same was I do a petrol - and that's from someone who calls a 4.0 V8 TDI Audi his daily driver.
