Hi all,

We have a 2001 1.9JTD (110 I think) SX Weekend and it seems to have a few problems ... I was wondering if someone on here with a bit of knowledge of the car could help me out. :)

1. When depressing or releasing the clutch at low speeds (i.e. in traffic) the car lets off a loud whine. We've taken it to a local garage who have tacked it down to the clutch ... how easy is it to fit a replacement clutch? Is it going to be a 1 man job, or would it require a few people, a hoist for the engine and possibly a lift?

2. When driving normally over bumps and potholes there is a noticeable knocking nose from individual corners of the car. Is it likely to be the suspension bushes at fault here? (i.e. worn down or destroyed.)

3. The hydraulics in the tailgate have, er, gone. (Damn those things weigh more than I thought!) ... How easy is it to refit these? I'm assuming it's a case of taking the old one off and whacking a new one straight in there ...

4. I had a look under the car last night after doing a little bit of driving locally and noticing what sounds like the underside of the car scraping along the road surface ... I took a few pics of the underside, but I can't remember for the life of me if the tray is:
  • Supposed to be this low
  • Supposed to have this dark fluid on it

I applied pressure to the tray thing and it doesn't seem to travel up v. far (the bolts at the front are still holding it, but I couldn't get a good look at the back). I ran my hand along the fluid too and as far as I can tell, it isn't oily. Is it normal for the engines to lose a little bit of fluid due to condensation? (It's been bone dry here in sunny Derbyshire for a few days now).

Thanks all! :)

1. definately sounds like the release bearing on the clutch. you can live with that for years before anything goes wrong, so dont see it as an emergency job. (fit a brand new 3 part kit if you're gonna bother changing it).

replacing the clutch is a 1 man job if you have the right tools and suitable location to do the job. the best way to do it is to raise the car on a lift and get a gearbox jack under the gearbox (and probably another under the sump as the JTD is heavy). then you can do it far more easily. if you plan to do it with the car jacked up on a driveway, good luck. :)

2. sounds like bushes to me. on the front its usually wishbones or drop links (both tend to wear quickly on heavy cars like the JTD).

3. sorry dont know what you mean :)

4. you can check if the tray is supposed ot be that low by simply trying to push it up. it should be bolted to the sump and there will be no movement. if the bolt has coem loose, is missing, or snapped off, you should do something about it before the tray ends up getting ripped off.

you would expect to find oil on the undertray because when you remove the oil filter with the tray in place, oil pisses everywhere. however you should consider keeping a close eye on the engine oil level to make sure there is no leak, and also look at the oil filter to check that it is not leaking.

Thanks very much! :)

What I meant by hydraulics are the little strut things that mean the tailgate doesn't FWUMP down on your head when you open the boot. ;) The replacements arrived yesterday, am going to have a look in the workshop manual for what to do.

Again, many thanks, it's greatly appreciated. :)
