I finally got round to building and installing my punto 60 engine into my 1.0 Uno. I built it up includeing getting the pistons, crank and flywheel balanced i cludeing getting the crank pully fixed as the ruffwood key snapped off lol.

Got all the gaskets and bearings, new thermostat and water pump and also had to replace the front water pipe which you can only get genuine at £42 inc VAT :O

I'm still running the engine in and only covered about 160 miles since saturday night. Using 20w50 oil at the mo then going to change to either 5w40 or 10w40 semi-synthetic. There is soo much more torque than the 999cc unit and it pulls so much in fifth.

Anyone who is going to do this conversion, it is soo easy, had the old block out i. About 1 hour and the new engine took about 2hours to put in and grind a bit off the block to get the starter motor to fit.

I did this at my work so i was able to use a ramp and engine crane. I've got a 4-2-1 stainless supersprint manifold on which i had to modifiy to meed the Uno system. That took longer than getting the engine in lol.

I'll post some pics up soon because there on my phone at the mo.

Nice work - and great that it took so little time to make the swap! 33% more power, though tuner boyz are unlikely to be too excited, I suppose ;)

Lovely finish on that cylinder head, nice clean pistons, and interesting choice of 'old Ford blue' on the block. The stainless extractors are beautiful and surely worth extra horsepower by themselves. Does it have a special camshaft?

'ruffwood' key made me laugh. My furniture is ruffwood, I'm fairly certain the semicircular bit of metal that keeps a pulley from spinning on its shaft is called a Woodruff key :)

Makes you wonder why it wasn't 1242cc in the first place, doesn't it...

I have an Alfa 166 at the moment and I hate it, I hate the way the 226bhp just seems to disappear into the automatic transmission and the ride manages to somehow stumble over every little bump despite the body feeling about as heavy as two Unos welded together (and probably about as agile, too.)

Lol i meant woodruff :p

The engine has only got the 866 cam but that was in it when i bought the engine.

I chose blue because i wanted something different other that black or red,
plus my uno is blue ;D

I can feel the power difference already and i'm only taking it up to 3000rpm until i run the new bearings and piston rings in. Can't wait untill i can open it up :D

Also i bought a tricker throttle body but i can't fit it at the moment because of the wiring. Everything will wire up apart from the throttle position sensor, the tricker has three wires but the uno one has four wires :/ so i'm a bit stuck lol.

I have all the connectors from a seicento loom as all the plugs on the uno are different so i will have to solder the new plugs in place.

Hi guys. I have a uno. Was a 1.1 mia 98 model. But the motor stuffd out so I got a palio 1242 motor and fitted it. Put the uno head on. Didn't get the palio head. And I can say it has more of a kick indeed. Only have forced induction fitted and a performance exhaust

Why exactly did the block need grinding for clearance - bigger starter motor?

Do you reckon a 16v 1242 wd have been just as easy?

What gearbox - kept the existing one? Like Punto type, not the old 128/Uno one?

I'm not sure. In za we don't get the 16v 1242 motors only the 8v. So if you give it a bash. Let us know if it was a success or failure. Prob will succeed

I was literally doing a straight swap, that meant using the 999cc Uno starter motor, i believe it must be a bit fatter than the punto's starter's as i had to grind some metal off of the block before the Uno's starter would sit flush on the bell housing.

A 16V 1242 is exactly the same essentially, maybe different internals like the punto 75 mpi engine but other than slight differences they are the same, the 16v head fit's on most FIRE engine so would be the same but as you pointed out on some fiats you may not have enough clearance with the 16v head.

Uno's have loads off room under the bonnet though, so a 16v head would fit easily. Dunc fitted a 2.0L Turbo lancia twincam beast in his 999cc, along with all the other turbos bits.

I kept the Uno's gearbox for two reasons, first was because if i used a punto gearbox i would have to swap my gear linkage for cables, which i didn't really know how to go about doing so I left it. Second was because the 999cc box has really good acceleration compared to a Punto's(non-turbo) and most other car's alot of people drive.

Hope this helps :)

Ah right, didn't have them side by side for long lol. The starters must also be different between punto's and Uno's aswell because they still need to sit on the flywheel. So the Punto starters may be slimmer.

But, fit a 16v head and you'll bend a valve (or four!) and have issues with the head bolts (16v uses 10mm, 8v 9mm) and head gasket. There are lots of subtle differences.

The 16v SuperFIRE engines will -- just -- fit a Cinq. Fitting a complete engine is the only econimoc way to do it, but I can't help on whether they'll fit a Uno.

Most are about the same size. They fit onto the gearbox of course, so it is simply the relationship of the nearest bit of block to the starter. Later FIRE models have a wide variety of starter sizes, with the latest ones being very much smaller and probably not requiring any block grinding.

The carb was SPI not manual and yes i am sadly, still getting round to getting the loom installed from a mk1 punto 60, i bought an ecu but not the type a MCrich chip can be fitted to so now gotta get a cinq ecu that will take the chip (IAW 16f er i think), map sensor and crank sensor then i can run my tricker throttle body :D

I'm suffering some pinking at the moment and it is doing my head in, i have tried shell v-power super unleaded and that has decreased the pinking but it is still there under load at about 3k-4krpm, I had the head skimmed because the head gasket blew and i think it may have been one too many as i did not know how many it had before i got the engine so i am on the look out for a 1242 or 1108 8v spi head, then i'll port match it before i fit to my block and have the coils fitted to it already as well as my spare 899 camshaft so it will be a quick swap when i eventually fit a good example of a head at a realistic price.

Exhaust manifold was bought from a member on here for about £120 and i had to chop it about just after the last 2 pipes converge so that it would mate with the Unos system.
