Hello folks just joined after trolling away in the background for a while and availing myself of the expertise and info on your fine site.

I've fallen heir to a 96 Punto 55 which I'm currently dismatling before the shell heads for the great breakers yard in the sky and I'm stuck for info on one bit.

I've tried to search for an answer on the forums and either the infos not here or I'm a complete berk and don't know how to work the system ( the latter being the more likely case ) so apologies if it's already been asked.

I've got the ECU out and have the matching keys. I've also removed all the locks barrels as they might be handy to go with the keys. I believe that the last thing I need to remove is the ignition barrel which will have the imobiliser thingy on it to complete the package. Is this so or is there some other thingy lurking about the dash that needs to come out too ?

Regards Rab

PS, 'Thingy' is a perfectly valid technical term down here !!:)

the Chip for the ECU is in the Key this talks to the ECU via an inductive coil usually around the ignition barrel, unless you plan to use the engine in something other than another punto i,e a project car, you don't need it. All you need is the key the locks and barrel and the ECU its self.
if you do want use the engine else where you'll probably be better off keeping the dash and engine wiring looms intact together

There is -- or should be -- a black box, around 1" x 2.5" x 2.5" right at the end of the transponder cable -- the "code box". Pop this open and you'll see a tiny microchip inside. Grab the box and keep it. Not certain where it is on Punto Mk1s, but should be in the passenger compartment, pretty much central. Grab it and keep it safe.

the black box plugs into the fuse box
without this box it is useless keeping all the other bits
im sure souls is selling similar on the right of this page for a looksy of what it looks like

unfortunately in this post AndyRKett gets it wrong and gets 0/10:D;)

Obrigado for the rapid replies folks, Unfortunatley (!?) due to an recent intake of the before mentioned red wine I shall have to wait until the morn before I can focus on yer replies

But while I remember, the ignition barrel is held on by a couple of " once we've fitted them you're never gonna get them off" type bolts, my plan is to cut the buggers (carefully) with the angle grinder! Is this the way or is there some kind of ninja Fiat special move to disconnect them otherwise ?

Regards, Rab

PS The above has taken the best part of an hour to write 'cos the keyboard is pished, innit ?!
