my 92 motor home built on a ducato 2.5 td smokes badly when cold, this smoke is grey and smells strongly of diesel, smokes dissapears when driven for a few miles. its had a recent service, all filtes ect, engine not burning oil excessively, i hav'nt owned this for long but i feel it should have a bit more pulling power although it it is a big (ish) 5 berth, can anyone help?

Hi,
I hope someone can help here because i have the same problem with my Ducato 1997 2.5 TDI , only done 35k miles-- starts first go but smokes black smoke. Clears after a while ok.
It has a single flame buru plug in the manifold and looks ok.
There is NO lights at all on the dash for it or any glow plug symbol.
When hot its fine.
Stinks out campsites --help!

Update on earlier post--
I have found out that this type has to be started on tick over only.
I added some injector cleaner to fuel yesterday and ran a few miles.
Started cold this morning and read that because it is a flame plug starter it will operate ok when left to idle.
I usually would have revved it till it cleared but that makes it worse.
I left it on idle from cold for about 30 seconds --then pulled away yes ----NO smoke!
I think i m used to modern diesel cars ect-when i can start rev and go-- but this is a little different.
Try it!(y)

Thanks for the reply, tried starting mine on tick over but still spewing out white/grey smoke 10 mins later, only clears after being driven for a couple of miles, know exactly what you mean about smothering the campsite though!!

Hi. It sounds like un-burnt diesel are the glow plugs O.K,does it start easily?

Could be the timing or a leaky injector.

hi, i dont think this one has glow plugs, no problem starting, engine runs well, yes, looks like its getting more fuel than needed for tickover but clears when is warmed up and driven for a while, tried adding a gallon of petrol to a full tank of diesel but no better, next time i fill up i will try some injector cleaner
