The local salvage yard has a cinq sporting rear end write off. Would the engine and all necessary parts fit into and 899 SX. Wasnt really after a sporting but if the price is right certainly worth considering. The wheels are gone i think before they got it but everything else is there except driver side rear shock which is mangled. Havent had the cinq for long and with 100k on clock have been doing a lot of work on it, in fact has the original fiat spark plugs so servicing has very seldom if ever been done. So just wondering is it a straight swap and is it worth the work to do it. I must add that despite the 100k the bodywork is in mint condition on my wee cinq.

This is something I am seriously considering for my 899cc. It's nippy, but I want some more horses.

I am not that far from you (Aberdeen) so maybe we could look at a collaboration and doing both our cars over time?

My actual plan is to take the engine up to the level I need to start the 1242 mod, but this can always be done at a later date.

Buying a Sporting at this point for me is not an option - I am too attached to the wee bugger I have!

Let me know!

I would look at dropping a 1242 in there instead of an 1108. It'd be the same amount of work.

Don't forget things like the sportings suspension (inc the ARB!)

if its to be done then it must be a 1242, this makes it sensible. jamieboys suspension is already beyond standard sporting spec, and its a cool colour, it would be entertaining!

Everyone always gets excited and starts saying do the 1242cc... but first thing is first, can he/she be insured on it...
if not then dont even start thinking about it.... even a 1108 drop would be more expensive than the Sporting on insurance as they would want to know things have been uprated to make sure it suited for the new engine, such as suspension as listed above and you know what insurance is like with engine swaps!

Consider whatever suits your budget (y)

Good luck with the swap

if they can afford an 1108 upgrade then i doubt the 1242 would be much more in this case.

i got a quote with HIC which includes all my mods and the engine swap and they gave me a quote of £550 3PF&F

im payin about £600 for a standard 899cc lol

i asked HIC how much it would be with the 1242 lump in and they said an extra £50 BARGIN!

That sounds pretty decent (y)

Cheers! Yours is a cool one in' all! :)

Insurance isn't so much of a worry for me at 27 as it used to be when I was 19/20 and had an XR2, Escort Turbo, R5 Turbo! Those were stupidly expensive! Going a named driver saved me £££! I actually got a £1k+ quote when I asked how much it would be for me to insure the R5 for just me. R-I-G-H-T.

I wanted to add this to the "Cento engine swaps" thread, but it's closed :(

If like me, you have an 899 and want more power, but don't want to get rid of your beloved 899, the 899 -> 1242 swap seems the most efficient in terms of time and hassle.

The final post by fixitagaintomorrow mentions almost all bits needed, but I think it would be nice to put together a shopping list and maybe 'how to' in one place for this conversion (thanks also to Rob).

New engine mounts*
Full new exhaust (899 is a smaller bore as standard)
1108 or 1242 ecu, or have the 899 remapped**
Sporting gearbox and driveshafts
Sporting gear stick, linkages and cables
Engine bay loom ideally*
Clutch
Engine complete with manifolds, SPI throttle body and sensors*
Induction kit or airbox*
Coils, plugs and leads*
Anti-roll bar would be nice
Water pipes

I have a few other unknowns to add:

Radiator source?

* are these from a Cinq Sporting or a Punto 60/ does it matter?
** for those who have the non-immobilised, 1-key deal ECU, would it do?

Thanks

899cc and Sportings use same radiators.

IIRC Peter ("Oldschool") said the 1242cc will run on the 899cc ECU, which I can believe...Id give it a go and see if it works tbh (if its a 16F, although some Punto 1242's did run the 6F ECU I think)

Sensors and ignition electronics can be from any car,
Engine mounts, Exhaust Manifold - Cinq Sporting
Airbox - dont bother...get an induction system ;)
Loom - Theres an interesting one...as the 899cc and Sporting ECUs are fundamentally identical from late 1995 onwards, so they effectively use the same loom - some parts may need lengthening to reach certain components.

As for the Mk1 loom, that uses all the same sensors as the Mk2 (which adds fuel to my idea about the 16F ECU being the 6F ECU with an immobiliser :p), so again, that SHOULD work, at least in theory!

Cheers Tom (y)

Depending on time and what's available, I may do the loom swap for the leccy windows and a 'proper' feed to my sporting clocks...

When the time comes, I would give my existing ECU a go and if it works; all well and good. it'll save some cash.

That said tho, I'm not 100% sure if it's behaving completely sanely(I still have that 4K5 flatspot and the engine warning light. Ah, which reminds me, I will have to put the bulb back in :D ). There's little point in me getting it scanned now - the car works pretty much fine at this moment in time. *touches head*

Presumably, the Sporting driveshafts fit the 899 outer CVs ok?
