Remove the shift knob by unscrewing it.
Prise up the rear of the panel that holds the shift boot in the centre console and then pull it rearwards to disengage the panel at its front - this panel has a bracket underneath at its front to hold it place and 2 pins at its rear that engage with plastic plugs. Lift the panel complete with shift boot up over the shift lever so that you can work on it. You may be able to access the rear of this panel to prise it upwards by removing the ashtray.
Turning over the panel you'll see the shift boot fits over a flange formed in the underside of the panel and is retained in place by a retainer strap. Iirc, this retainer strip is locked in place by a pop rivet. Note how the shift boot is clamped in place then
carefully remove this pop rivet to release the retainer and then the shift boot. Be careful not to damage this retainer as they seem to be out of stock.
Fit the new shift boot as per the original, iirc, the lower edge of the boot is first folded over the flange and is then clamped in place by the retainer strip before inserting a new pop rivet to secure it. If this retainer strip is damaged, you might be able to substitute e.g. a large zip tie or similar. Having another pair of hands to help in holding the shift boot in place while fitting the retainer would be useful.
Refit the panel by locating the front bracket in place, push the panel forward and then press down the rear of the panel so that the pins engage the plastic plugs to secure it in place.
Refit the shift knob.
