:)Has anyone here fitted a 500 bell housing to a 500D engine and used the 3 bolt starter motor along with the ‘F’ flywheel? There is no casting on the ‘D’ block to enable a top starter motor stud to be fitted so this starter motor fixing can only be used by say a nut and bolt through the bell housing alone leaving it vulnerable to breaking. Perhaps some sort of bracket?

I see no logical reason as to why you can't use the "3-bolt" bell-housing on a 500D. But yes, you WOULD have to give the starter more support. (A) you MIGHT be able to weld on a little stiffening plate on the ENGINE side of the top bolt-hole PLUS, (B) you also fit a "Starter support bracket". These are available from "Passione" (in Italy---got any relatives or friends over there?)---part number:---ELE22C---cost E45

Many thanks ‘the hobbled’ for your reply - however I’m looking for a more reversible solution i.e. perhaps a bracket fastened to an existing threaded hole.

The bracket from "Passione" IS just a bracket that can be bolted on/off as required. It uses 2 of the normal bell-housing bolts to secure it to the bell-housing and then 'wraps round' the starter.

Many thanks, will investigate bracket further.
